November 2015 - In This Issue:
Thank You Marcy!

13-year-old Marcy is a PHFS volunteer that recently celebrated her Bat Mitzvah. In preparation for this big day, Marcy's parents asked her to pick out a problem in the world that she would like to fix -- Marcy chose Child Homelessness.

On the night of her Bat Mitzvah, Marcy had her guests bring donations to PHFS -- including shampoo, cold medicine, and gift cards for our guests.

If that wasn't enough, Marcy also made a $1,000 donation to PHFS - out of her own money.

Thank you, Marcy! We are so inspired by your giving spirit!
PCAPPA Supports PHFS with Annual Conference

The Pacific Coast Region of APPA hosted their annual conference in Portland this year. Rather than giving each of their conference attendees a booklight or paper weight, PCAPPA opted to donate the amount they would have spent on a conference gift to PHFS.

After this act of generosity, conference speakers and conference attendees chose to also donate to PHFS and PCAPPA ended up raising $2,562 at the conference! Thank you PCAPPA!

$98,550 Raised at 2015 Family Reunion Fundraiser!

Thank you to everyone who joined us at the 2015 PHFS Family Reunion Fundraiser! Thanks to your support we raised an amazing $98,550 to end family homelessness. This is more than we have ever raised before! It is because of the support from you, our PHFS Village, that we are able to help more than 500 moms, dads, and children get back into housing - and stay there.
#HumanMuralPDX

Last week, PHFS staff and supporters joined representatives from other non-profits featured in Give!Guide to spell out GIVE! on the waterfront. This human mural grabbed the attention of many and this display of generosity was even featured on the news! Click here to watch KGW's coverage of the event!

Volunteer Spotlight:
Shira Einstein
How long have you been volunteering with PHFS and what got you involved initially?
2 years. In the summer of 2013 my family started volunteering as Meal Providers at PHFS. My dad loves cooking, and my mom loves hosting, so they made a great team for this role!

In what position/shift do you typically volunteer and has that changed or evolved over the years (and why)?
While providing meals was fun and meaningful, I wanted to get to know the families better. I chose to volunteer as a Kids' Time Host. Playing with and reading to the kiddos has been so, so fun! Despite their difficult circumstances the children are resilient, happy, and peaceful. They continue to teach me that the glass is half full!

What's your favorite thing about volunteering with PHFS?
The community atmosphere. While each family comes from a different background with a unique story, they come together and form a supportive, safe, and inclusive "family." This community has the attitude of more strength together than alone and they hold each other up.

Can you share any advice (pro tips/best practices) for new volunteers?
Come in with an open mind and heart. Allow yourself to be uncomfortable, vulnerable, and willing to learn. Listen generously, give a lot of hugs, and be an advocate for the people that you meet here.

Outside of PHFS, what do you do for fun/to unwind/relax?
I get out of town and into nature! Hike in the Columbia Gorge, swim with my dogs in the Pacific Ocean, kayak in the Willamette, or camp out in Eastern Oregon.

What's something nifty or fun that few others would know about you?
I am a childhood cancer survivor. I was very lucky and got excellent treatment here at OHSU. I am now healthy and cured but my fight is not over. I am now a Medical Student and my passion is to increase access to care for underserved populations including the families at PHFS. I will be working hard to help this community be as healthy as they deserve to be!
Congratulations! You made it to the bottom.
Now time to check out some photos of this cat from the PNW that hikes with his owners.

Thanks for all you do!
