May 2014 Edition
A-B Tech College Advancement
Message from the Executive Director

We're excited to be sending you the first edition of The College Advancement Newsletter!  We want to keep you informed because you help us reach our goal of supporting A-B Tech students through your charitable contributions, volunteer service, and student mentoring.  I can say from experience that your support means a lot to the over 68% of our current students who need financial assistance in order to get an education.

Through this monthly newsletter, we will highlight student success stories, Foundation news and events, and the invaluable role our A-B Tech Alumni play in giving.  We hope that you'll enjoy reading about the important work that you are helping to make possible!

Together we are all empowering our students to create a future with no limits!

Gratefully,
null

Executive Director

P.S. As we look to spread the word about the work that you make possible, we hope that you'll share this newsletter with contacts!

Spotlight on Student Rosaline Gordon!

Rosaline was employed with Women At Risk (Western Carolinians for Criminal Justice) for five years as a Clinical Case Manager, Certified Substance Abuse Counselor and Court Advocate in Henderson County.  When WAR lost their funding she decided to attend A-B Tech to obtain a degree in Human Services Technology which would put her on the path of obtaining a BSW and MSW at Western Carolina University.  Rosaline is currently enrolled in the Human Services Technology/Social Services Program at A-B Tech.   She plans to graduate May 2015.  She would like to become employed at a local hospital as a social worker or at the Buncombe County Department of Social Services.

Rosaline is the recipient of the Lavender Fund Scholarship, Dislocated Worker Enrollment Scholarship, and Osborne M. Hart Endowed Scholarship.  Regarding the impact of this financial assistance, she states, "This opportunity has been a blessing to me and my family and with this financial support I can continue to work on achieving my academic goals.  A couple of years ago no one could have convinced me that as a 49 year old mother and grandmother I would be attending college."  Rosaline is a recent inductee into the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and made the Deans' list for fall 2013.

A-B Tech Alumnus Establishes Endowment to Aid Business Students

Thanks to a generous donation from an alumnus, three new business scholarships will be available to students in the Fall of 2014. James T. "Tommy" Rice, Jr., a 1977 Accounting graduate, has pledged $90,000 to award and permanently endow these scholarships in memory of his father, James T. "J.T." Rice, Sr. This gift marks the largest single donation by an alumnus in A-B Tech's history.

"My father believed in hard work and a strong educational foundation," said Rice. "As a child, I recall Dad telling me that education was necessary for success. I am honored that I am able to make such an impact in the lives of students at A-B Tech in his memory."  Read more here

New Support Comes to A-B Tech

The Craft Beverage Institute of the Southeast at A-B Tech recently received a $195,000 grant from Duke Energy to expand the program and its equipment.  The money will buy a seven-barrel brew house, a canning machine, a distillation system and a micro winery and "put money into a sensory analysis laboratory," said Scott Adams, director of the program.  Two dozen students are now in the program, and another two dozen will begin in August.  Students have traveled to the school from Oregon, Pennsylvania, and Michigan.  Read more here

In addition to this news, two manufacturing companies have recently stepped forward to create annual scholarships for our students:  Advanced Superabrasives (ASI), a company located in Mars Hill who manufactures resin bonded diamond and CBN grinding wheels, and Plasticard-Locktech International (PLI), a company located in Asheville that is currently the world's largest manufacture of hotel keycards in addition to be a leading specialty printer of plastic and paper products.  In addition to this support, both ASI and PLI were 2014 Job Fair participants and they continue to utilize our Job Board for hiring A-B Tech students.  A-B Tech has also partnered with PLI for workforce training.

These are just a few of the amazing companies in our service area who are working to support our students.  We're grateful for their partnerships!

A-B Tech Foundation Golf Tournament

The 11th annual K. Ray Bailey / A-B Tech Foundation Invitational Golf Tournament - which supports the students of A-B Tech through the Foundation's scholarship program - is coming up on June 6, 2014 at Mount Mitchell Golf Course.  We expect 144 local leaders, community members and business owners, as well as more than 30 volunteers, to participate.

In the past 10 years, this tournament has raised more than $340,000 for student scholarships at A-B Tech.  Last year, the K. Ray Bailey Invitational Golf Tournament Scholarship was awarded to 40 students who may not have been able to attend college otherwise.  With more than 68% of our students needing financial assistance in order to attend college, the success of this tournament makes a huge impact in many of our students' lives.

Sponsorship opportunities at a variety of levels are still available; please contact Susan Haldane at 828-398-7567 or [email protected] for more information.
