A-B Tech College Advancement
From the Director's Desk

A-B Tech is truly the community's college. In the office of College Advancement, we work to support the College and we encounter our fellow supporters everywhere.

This past week, those supporters looked like the Asheville DesignBuild Studio. The firm has had a positive experience with A-B Tech Construction Management student Brian Walgreen as their summer Intern. Brian was supported by donors Tom and Nancy Maher. The firm, in turn, is supporting the YWCA with a much-needed project for an outdoor space for the kids.

And, last week, the supporter looked like Reynolds Mountain Dentistry and Dr. Steven Adams. His practice continues to support A-B Tech; his office contributes to scholarships and is also an employer of three A-B Tech alumni!

In education, we call these efforts "closing the loop". Students are educated and trained; students are hired; employers give back in supportive ways to A-B Tech. Or maybe that's called "paying it forward" - either way, it's working well for our community!

We hope you enjoy this edition of the College Advancement Newsletter.

"Don't Postpone Joy" Memorial Scholarship Honors Legacy of Laurey Masterton

The Asheville community lost one of its brightest lights when Laurey Masterton passed away this past February
. Masterton was the chef and proprietor of Laurey's, a caf and catering company serving "Gourmet Comfort Food" since 1987. As an active member of the local community, she supported local farm-to-table initiatives, focusing particularly on helping children experience gardening as well as the cooking and eating of nutritious food.

We were especially honored when Laurey's sister, Heather, approached the Foundation about establishing a scholarship in her memory for our culinary program. The goal of the Scholarship is to provide the resources necessary to students who embody not only Laurey's love for food, but her love and a contagious appetite for life and bettering her community. With the assistance of many friends of Laurey - including local community volunteer Eleanor Owen and co-owner of Chestnut and Corner Kitchen Joe Scully - work began on an event to announce the new scholarship.

Over 75 people attended the June 22nd kickoff event to establish the Laurey Masterton "Don't Postpone Joy" Memorial Scholarship. A number of local chefs, including A-B Tech alumni Reza Setayesh and Karen Donatelli, donated food and told the crowd of how Laurey impacted the local culinary culture here in Asheville. Chef Scully said at the event, "Without Laurey, there would be no me, there would be no Asheville food scene."

Thanks to the support of so many in the community, the Foundation has raised over $21,000 for the Scholarship, with a goal of raising $60,000 over the next 3 years.

If you would like to make a contribution to the scholarship please visit our website at www.abtech.edu/donate and choose the "Laurey Masterton Memorial Scholarship Fund" under the designation menu. Spotlight on the Asheville Latin Americans for Advancement Society

Students at A-B Tech come from all backgrounds imaginable and enroll at the College for a myriad of reasons. The sources of financial support our students receive is about as diverse as our student population - in most cases, strangers helping strangers.

One such example is the Asheville Latin Americans for Advancement Society (ALAS). Founded in 2005 and officially incorporated as a non-profit in 2008, ALAS is a Latino led organization whose mission is to improve access to education within the local Latino community through mentoring, scholarships, and training.

From 2007-2013 ALAS was the lead organization supporting the annual Fiesta Latina festival held at the WNC Agricultural Center and in Downtown Asheville, bringing thousands of people together to celebrate Latino culture. However, in 2013 ALAS decided to no longer organize the festival and to instead focus their energy in other areas. After all of Fiesta expenses were paid the Board of Directors voted to establish a scholarship at A-B Tech for students who are not eligible for in-state tuition or any form of State or Federal aid due to their immigration status. Through this privately funded scholarship ALAS hopes to fulfill the dreams of undocumented students who may attend A-B Tech to pursue a career or learn a skill, but who may face financial barriers in the process. The organization also hopes this scholarship will raise awareness about the issues undocumented students in our community face when paying for college. They want to set an example for other higher education foundations across the region so they too can offer similar types of scholarships and support to undocumented students.

When asked to speak to the importance of giving, one member of the ALAS Board remarked, "As a Latina I give in so many ways - with my time, energy, and money. Philanthropy is not only for people who have a lot of money. Giving of any amount is helpful to the cause. This year's scholarship was funded by over 100 people giving small and large amounts. We believe that giving is essential to growth, development, and enrichment of the entire community and every dollar helps."

They closed the interview by saying, "Being able to help one student at a time fills our hearts with joy. We also recognize there is so much more need out there and we hope to grow this scholarship over time and help more students each year."

Tip of the Month:  Double or Triple Your Contribution Through Matching Gifts!

Did you know that many corporations match financial contributions when their employees, retirees, and board members give to their favorite nonprofit organizations? By participating in these matching gift programs, donors to the A-B Tech Foundation can double or even triple their impact through a charitable contribution.

Most companies with a matching gift program will have set guidelines to be followed and forms to be completed. Typically, there is a Human Relations or Charitable Giving Department that works with employees in preparing the proper documentation. Donors often can include retired employees, spouses, or widows of employees as well as currently employed personnel.

To confirm that your company will match your gift, please contact your company's Human Resources Department or Charitable Giving Department. Feel free to contact the College Advancement office if we can be of assistance!
