With the start of a new school year, our campus has again become a whirlwind of activity! Close to 400 A-B Tech students are particularly excited about the start of the academic year; these are the students who are supported by Foundation scholarships for the 2014-2015 school year! Through the thoughtful giving of others, these college students are ready to earn a credential that may well change their lives, the lives of their families, and their communities for the better. It was great to see and meet many of these students at our recent Welcome Back Fall Festival!
The arrival of Autumn also means that our annual Universal Campaign is right around the corner; it offers an opportunity for our employees to "pay it forward" so to speak in support of our students. Over the past year, A-B Tech employees have pledged their support to not only the scholarship and faculty development programs of the A-B Tech Foundation, but also to the many programs supported by United Way and Eblen Charities. This giving has helped to ensure that more and more students receive scholarships and emergency support. Employees, we commend you! Your contributions are needed and appreciated by many! (Remember: 72% of our students need financial support!)
We also wanted to inform you of some changes around our own office for the fall. Mark Newman, Alumni Relations and Resource Development Coordinator with the Office of College Advancement, has taken a new position with UNC-Chapel Hill. Mark has been a great asset for "Team College Advancement" throughout his time here and we wish him all the best as he returns to his alma mater to work in development for the College of Arts & Sciences!
We're sad to see Mark go, but excited to announce that Jeralie Andrews will join us in broadening her work with Volunteers and Interns to support our work in connecting to our many A-B Tech Alumni. Thank you, Mark, and welcome, Jeralie!
Happy Fall Semester!

Buncombe County Sheriff's Department Makes Donation to Hewitt Scholarship Fund
|
The Sergeant Jeffrey Hewitt Memorial Endowed Scholarship, established in 2006 at A-B Tech, received a boost from the proceeds from a 5k race the Buncombe County Sheriff's Office held in April at the Cliffs at Walnut Cove, the day after the 10th anniversary of his death.
Sheriff Van Duncan and members of Hewitt's family presented a check on August 15th for $4,745 to the A-B Tech Foundation for the scholarship, which is awarded to students enrolled in the Criminal Justice Technology, Emergency Medical Science (EMS) or Fire Protection Technology programs.

Valeria Concio, a Criminal Justice Technology student, is the latest recipient of the award. "I am extremely appreciative of this scholarship, especially for my parents," she said. "Paying for school has been a struggle." Valeria will graduate in May and hopes to become a homicide detective.
Sergeant Hewitt served with the Buncombe County Sheriff's Office for 11 years. He was fatally shot while attempting to serve involuntary mental commitment papers on April 4, 2004. He received many outstanding awards during his career with the Sheriff's Department, including 2001 Officer of the Year. Hewitt also took law enforcement classes at A-B Tech.
"This means an awful lot to us and it would to Jeff. It was a lot of hard work but became more than what we ever dreamed," said Pat Hewitt, Jeff's mother.

A Conversation With A-B Tech Volunteer of the Month Bob Day
|
Throughout 2014, the Office of College Advancement has seen our work supported by our very own volunteer, Bob Day. Every Friday, Bob is in our office helping out with everything from researching local businesses, assisting with grants, updating our database records, and even pitching in to help with mailings and events. In addition to this, Bob also works with our Financial Aid Office assisting students with the FAFSA process for federal student aid and will soon serve as a mentor to an A-B Tech student. In recognition of his superb work, Bob was recently named A-B Tech's Volunteer of the Month for August (which you can read more about here).
We recently had the opportunity to sit down with Bob for a brief conversation about his background, his work with A-B Tech and our students, and his support of our scholarship programs.
Hi Bob, thanks for taking the time to talk to us! I wanted to start the interview by having you speak a little to your background in Asheville.
I've lived within an hour of Asheville for about twenty years. In the late nineties, when I was living in Spartanburg and working there, I decided I was going to retire permanently and bought a second home here in Asheville and began to enjoy the amenities of Asheville on weekends. I permanently retired in 2010 and moved here shortly thereafter.
How did you get connected with A-B Tech?
I contacted Jeralie Andrews in the volunteer office. Having spent a career of over twenty-five years in community colleges in other states, I thought there might be some opportunities for me here.
What volunteer roles have you had the opportunity to fill at the College so far?
When we initially interviewed last December, I expressed to Jeralie my interest in spending some time working with students or potential students directly and some time working with administration and staff - splitting my time so that I could get different perspectives. So my experience since January has been working four hours a week as a FAFSA by appointment assistant in Financial Aid, helping students to complete their FAFSA online. I had done a little of that in a previous life helping students at the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind. I thought that might be a good opportunity to help students. And then secondly working with the Foundation and the Advancement Office with donor files and special projects like mailers, helping with special events or as needed in other areas building on my past experience.
Is there a specific project or task that has been particularly memorable or important for you here?
I've enjoyed everything, and I particularly enjoy the people that I work with honestly. I very much do. On Thursday afternoons I enjoy working with some of the work study students who help out in the lab, and getting to know them. And as a matter of fact, I should add that I've just this week been assigned a mentee. So I'll be working as a mentor, one of the twelve or so mentors here for students. It happens to be one of the College Work Study students who I've been working with all along! Jeralie made the match for us. So I'll be looking forward to working with her.
But everything has been memorable here. I look forward to Thursdays and Fridays because they're my two volunteer half days.
In addition to giving your time as a volunteer and as a mentor here, you also give to our students as a donor to the scholarship programs of the A-B Tech Foundation. What sort of impact do you hope to have through your contributions to these scholarships?
I hope they make a difference in the lives of some of our students in the future. I had a hard time determining how I wanted to divide my contributions, so I split it between three funds. Women have always had an importance in my life, so I'm looking at the Lavender Fund. I worked in the area of business and I'm a foodie who appreciates the good culinary scene here in Asheville, so the Laurey Masterton Don't Postpone Joy Memorial Scholarship was certainly worth investing in. And I initially got involved actually with A-B Tech last October when I made a contribution to the 100 Men and Women Scholarship, and I'm continuing to give to that as well. I've worked in minority institutions before in the South so that too is important to me.
But I hope to make a difference in the lives of students who receive these scholarships.
Could you speak a little to the importance of volunteering and giving for you personally?
Well volunteering is something that's been part of my life I guess all along through my career in working with students and with nonprofits. I think charitable giving comes along with volunteering as well. It's a positive opportunity to pass it along, pass it forward. Knowing how a previous generation helped my generation, it's time to pass it on and invest in the next generation.Interested in volunteering with A-B Tech? Alumni Spotlight on Tricia Gilbert
|
With so many different stories connected to our students, we like to take time to spotlight certain students and alumni each month. This month we had the opportunity to speak with alumna
Tricia Gilbert. Tricia applied to A-B Tech's Dental Hygiene Program in 2011. This represented a second chance for Tricia - she had initially attended UNC Asheville in 1990 but did not complete a degree at the time. While awaiting acceptance into the Dental Hygiene Program, Tricia worked on completing her prerequisite courses and was given the opportunity to apply for the Grace Joan Love Schneider Scholarship Fund. She was selected as a scholarship recipient for the 2013-2014 academic year, an opportunity which helped to alleviate some of the additional costs that were incurred through pursuit of her chosen field of study. With this assistance, Tricia was able to graduate this past May with an Associate's Degree in Dental Hygiene "It was an honor to be a scholarship recipient," Tricia said, commenting on the impact that the Grace Joan Love Schneider Scholarship has had for her. When asked what she would say to her scholarship donor if she had the opportunity, Tricia said, "I would thank the donor for providing funds to not only myself, but other students who were in need of a little extra funding that allowed us the opportunity to accomplish the goals we set for our future." Reflecting on her time at A-B Tech, Tricia indicated that she is most proud of being able to complete her field of study and graduate. "I like the fact that my children were able to see me bring light into a dark time in our lives by not giving up when things were tough." Tricia currently resides in Nashville, where she works for an oral surgeon. She plans to continue her studies at East Carolina University, with the goal of earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Dental Hygiene. Interested in connecting with the A-B Tech Alumni Association?
