Alumni Spotlight on Emma Jean Harper |
Emma Jean Harper could describe herself as being a hard worker and dependable, showing respect for all people and possessing the zeal to encourage others to improve their circumstances. Anyone who knows her would agree and be inclined to add the point she lights up a room with her smile and draws you into her space.
As a graduate of A-B Tech, volunteer, and employee of the college as an Administrative Assistant in Continuing Education, this alumnus certainly does stay connected with the educational community that helped enrich her life.
Harper became a student at A-B Tech after being out of school for 30 years. "Between working a full time management position and a full time class schedule, the first two semesters were a little overwhelming. However, I was determined this is what I wanted to do," she said. "I created a schedule for myself as to how I was going to accomplish my goal and I stayed with it. I kept up my grades and may have missed one day out of two years. My instructors were knowledgeable and helpful in all areas of my studies. My overall academic experience at A-B Tech was delightful," Harper noted.
Harper graduated with her A.A.S. in Human Services Technology/Social Services from A-B Tech in 2007. She also acquired a certificate in Speed Spanish for the Workplace I, II and III in A-B Tech's Continuing Education Program and earlier a diploma as a clerk/typist from Blanton's Business College.

A-B Tech Receives Grant Support for the Minority Student Leadership Academy |
We're happy to share that A-B Tech was recently awarded a $26,750 grant from the Sisters of Mercy of North Carolina Foundation and an additional $15,228 from the North Carolina Community College System to further support the college's Minority Student Leadership Academy.
The purpose of the A-B Tech Minority Student Leadership Academy is to address opportunity gaps for minority students to facilitate personal, educational and career goal completion. The Academy offers intensive advising and support, free academic study-hall with tutoring, a life coach mentoring program, one-on-one assistance from an Academy academic coach, service learning, enrichment travel, and workshops on academic preparation, career development, and financial literacy.
The Academy is in its seventh year at A-B Tech after starting in the fall of 2008. The program was established through a grant from the North Carolina Community College System aimed at increased retention and graduation rates among minority males. A-B Tech broadened its program to include female students. The program currently serves 200 curriculum students of various backgrounds with just under 100 students actively engaged in monthly programming opportunities. The program saw a fall semester to spring retention rate of 73%, with four students completing their program of study at the end of the fall semester. Positive peer feedback helped the Academy to gain 41 new members during the first few weeks of the spring semester.
