Our Snapshot of the Month

Sometimes a student's graduation may not represent a beginning as much as it represents a "do over".
A-B Tech's happy and proud graduates - all 1,000 of them - represented students who found their niche, found their groove, and graduated on June 16th with a credential that may well change their lives. Some of these graduates found the perfect degree program... sometimes after more than one try; but, they found it, at A-B Tech!
Many graduates found support from Foundation scholarships. Many found important support from family and employers. These successful grads - now A-B Tech alumni - are headed to our workforce or to our partner universities. We're very proud of them!
We would also like to congratulate Mr. and Mrs. Jack and Carolyn Ferguson on receiving honorary Associate in Health Sciences degrees and Mr. Mike Fryar for receiving an honorary Associate in Governmental Management degree.
Dr. David O. Belcher, WCU Chancellor, gave this challenge to the Class of 2015 in his keynote address: "This is your moment and I insist that you celebrate."
Me, too!
Sincerely,
Sue H Olesiuk

Another year, another successful K. Ray Bailey / A-B Tech Foundation Invitational Golf Classic! This year's event took place Friday June 5, 2015 at Mount Mitchell Golf Course and raised over $39,000 towards the K. Ray Bailey/A-B Tech Foundation Golf Classic Scholarship program, one of the largest scholarships administered to A-B Tech students by the A-B Tech Foundation. We appreciate the hard work of the 2015 Golf Tournament Planning Committee, as well as our staff and volunteers who helped with the planning and execution of this event. You made it happen! Finally, a huge "Thank You" to all of the 2015 Teams and Sponsors for making this such a successful event. We hope you enjoyed yourselves at the tournament, and we look forward to seeing you again next year! If you were at the event, then you had the chance to hear from Penny Meisenzahl, an A-B Tech nursing student and 2015 Golf Classic Scholarship recipient, on what the support provided by this event means to her: "Each person that you meet makes an impact on your life. I would like to say that you have made a wonderful impact on my life and that of my family. Thank you again for the opportunity that this scholarship opens for me." |

Duke Energy Foundation Awards $499,614 to A-B Tech for Advanced Manufacturing Training |
A-B Tech has created the
Advanced Manufacturing Center to help train potential employees and prepared them for jobs waiting to be filled. The Center will be located on the Asheville campus in the former Maple Building.
"Our manufacturing industry partners told us that demand for advanced manufacturing technicians was reaching the critical mark. And, that this was fueled by their increasing dependence on automated and mechanized equipment," said Dennis King, A-B Tech's president. "They have to keep this equipment up and running 24/7. We knew we had to respond quickly to help create workforce capacity." "In response to that, the college worked with Duke Energy Foundation to secure $499,614 in grant funding," King said. With this funding, A-B Tech will be adding mills, lathes, soldering stations and microscopes, industrial control systems trainers, hydraulic/pneumatic A-frame trainers, a flexible manufacturing system, a pumps training system, a mechanical training system, and specialty process logic control (PLC) trainers.
In 2013, the manufacturing industry in North Carolina accounted for 11.1 percent of total employment in the state, higher than the national total of nine percent. Those jobs have an average, annual salary of $54,000 in North Carolina, according to the state Department of Commerce.
"North Carolina's future depends on a workforce that can support and advance emerging industries," said Mike Hughes, Duke Energy vice president, community relations. "We're proud to partner with A-B Tech and its Advanced Manufacturing Center as it prepares our next generation workforce for success."
"Every day we have an employer calling us looking for students ready to enter the workforce to fill the demand," said Vernon Daugherty, Dean of Engineering and Applied Technology at A-B Tech.
Advanced Superabrasives in Mars Hill manufactures resin-bonded diamond and cubic boron nitride grinding wheels. The work requires precision and the ability to use CNC controlled equipment. Jonathan Szucs, General Manager, is an A-B Tech graduate and hires A-B Tech graduates in his facility.
"I know A-B Tech gives their students the hands-on training they need to understand how the process works inside an advanced manufacturing facility. I have seen what is taught at other schools and while the theory and textbook information are important, it doesn't compare to real-world experience," Szucs said.
A-B Tech has a number of Advanced Manufacturing college degree pathways, credential and short-term training options, some of which students can start accessing in high school. Students can discover the world of robotics, electronics, computers, mathematics, and engineering through these programs.
"A-B Tech is showing its commitment to short-term training in advanced manufacturing to better serve local business and industry and the local workforce. We will focus on several sectors important to local industry such as machining, CNC operations, engineering design, electrical components and assembly, composites, industrial systems and maintenance, automation and robotics, mechatronics," said Kevin Kimrey, Director of Economic and Workforce Development.

New Occupational Therapy Assistant Major Supported By Foundation Office |
The A-B Tech Foundation has broken new ground by providing $60,000 in first-year faculty funding for a new Associate of Applied Science Degree major at the College. Occupational Therapy Assistant will be added to the broad array of Allied Health programs at the College in the 2016-17 year. This is the first time that the Foundation has funded the first year of a new major. Foundation Board Chair, Michael Kryzanek, stated, "While much of our effort is geared towards supporting student scholarships, it is our intent to assist the College with new initiatives to serve Buncombe and Madison counties. Funding a full-time faculty position for one year in advance of the Occupational Therapy Assistant Program's full implementation is one example. The decision of our board of directors was unanimous to support this initiative." According to Vice President for Instruction, Melissa Quinley, new community college majors do not receive start-up funding from the NC Department of Community Colleges. Typically, the colleges must generate start-up funding for new programs from existing funding Additionally, initiation of this major is unlike any other in the Allied Health field. Program requirements are established by the specialized accrediting agency, the "Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education" (ACOTE). The organization requires that a program chair be hired, a self-study completed, and accreditation be achieved prior to the acceptance of the first class. The Foundation's donation to the college will allow the hiring of the Program Chair to undertake these critical steps, including hiring of other faculty, establishing area clinical affiliations with hospitals and other healthcare facilities, marketing the program and recruiting the first class which is limited to only 20-24 students. The first class of students will be accepted in Spring 2016 and will begin classes in Fall 2016. Occupational Therapy Assistant Programs exist in only six (6) other North Carolina community colleges, and ACOTE (the accrediting agency) allows only 15 new programs per year in the country. The program will serve the rapidly growing medical community in WNC and will serve public and private facilities, as well as the veteran population served by the Charles George Veterans Administration Hospital in Oteen. Ms. Quinley stated, "This new program is important to our area in meeting labor market needs with the growth of population, the growth of retirees and veterans, and the increase in long-term care facilities." |
