Recognizing Service and Volunteerism throughout Maryland

The upcoming commemoration of MLK Day on Monday, January 18, is an opportunity to re-commit ourselves as citizens by volunteering in service to one another. Governor Hogan encourages all Marylanders to participate in a service activity on MLK Day. Even the smallest act of service or kindness can change Maryland for the better!

Take a "day on, not a day off" this holiday to serve others throughout the community on January 18, 2016. Here are some local volunteer opportunities:

Families and volunteers of all ages are invited by  Anne Arundel County Volunteer Center (AACVC)  to enjoy the opportunity to give back to the community by working on service projects provided by several local nonprofits.  Go to  www.aacvc.org  to find out more.

The Volunteer Center Serving Howard County is hosting a county-wide Day of Service. A number of organizations will have on-site volunteer opportunities and activities for individuals and families. Several off-site opportunities are also available.  For details, go to www.volunteerhoward.org .

The Montgomery County Volunteer Center welcomes all to a Volunteer Fair and multiple family-friendly service projects throughout the county. The day will close with a free musical celebration held at the Music Center at Strathmore. Business Volunteers Maryland is sponsoring several service events in the Greater Baltimore area. Activities will be hosted by The 6th Branch, Moveable Feast, Parks & People Foundation, Chesapeake Education Arts and Research Society (CHEARS), and the Living Classrooms Foundation. A STAR! in Western Maryland and community partners will be volunteering with Glories Happy Hats to make hats for children who are terminally ill, blankets for cancer survivors, and kindness flyers for local businesses to display sharing their stories of kindness. This open event will take place from 10 a.m. to  1 p.m. at 928 N. East Street  in Frederick .

Reading Partners will host two litter removal/beautification projects at  The Historic Samuel Coleridge-Taylor Elementary School and  Furman L. Templeton Preparatory Academy . Volunteers are asked to report from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. to one of the sites with their own gloves and trash bags.
