Spotlight on Success

Edison Academics in Bradenton has hired many new faculty members since being introduced to the Learning Compact in May of 2013. Kaethe Perez met with Principal Zonnie Simard and new staff members on January 8, 2014, showing them how to sign in, create their classes and begin to scope and sequence their curriculum standards. Kaethe also showed them how to access  the three instructional video links  to begin the Learning Compact process.

Incarnation Catholic School in Sarasota has decided to use the SLC with their Math School Improvement Team teachers, concentrating on the mathematics standards, and using the Learning Compact to assist families in understanding the mathematics being taught in their child's classroom. Principal Regina Housel and staff members are very excited to find the 'hot' links in selected mathematics standards that take them to Khan Academy math videos and exercises.

During the week of January 27th, the parents of Abundant Life Christian School were pampered and appreciated with a full week of activities that say, "We love our Parents"! The school sent out to parents an invitation outlining a week of events just for parents.

These included a Monday Parent Dinner, a Tuesday "Hats Off to You" day, a Wednesday Morning Treat, a Thursday Parent Appreciation Chapel, and on Friday, a Parents' Night Out with free child care for parents to enjoy an evening out

without children!

What a wonderful way to honor parents and to show appreciation for all the parent does to ensure their children are successful!!

How Will You Use the
Student Learning Compact

As you can see from our Spotlights this month, schools are already using the Learning Compact to support student academic achievement and productive three-way communication among teachers, students, and caregivers. Here are a few ways you can use the Learning Compact to build partnerships with caregivers and increase student achievement:

  • Got a student who is struggling with math homework? Talk to that student's caregiver about watching the Khan Academy videos linked to those specific math standards! Even if Jennifer's grandmother doesn't understand her algebra homework, she can make sure she watches the Khan Academy videos and practices the associated exercises.
  • Do you like to be able to see the big picture when you think about your lessons for the year? Use the Class CCSS page to map your curriculum for the quarter, the semester, or even the year. Marking the standards that you plan to teach with "Teacher plans to introduce standard" in the month that you plan to teach them creates a map that you can use to constantly review what you are teaching and to then mark the standards for individual student achievement (Passed but not mastered/Mastery (earned 80% or higher)/Failed).
  • Have you ever left a caregiver-teacher conference wondering how productive it actually was or wishing you had a concrete plan for how to move forward in order to best support that student? Design your conference around creating an individual Learning Compact for that student. You have the opportunity to suggest interventions that the student and caregiver can try, as well as to choose the interventions that you pledge to do to support that student. The caregiver and student will also have the opportunity to collaborate with you on those interventions, as well as to teach you a little more about that student's strengths, interests, and assets. Each party leaves the conference with a concrete document outlining the plan to increase that student's achievement.
