Making Khan Academy Work for You!
Now that our Learning Compact directly connects math standards with Khan Academy
exercises and videos, it is even more important to make sure that your students and their families are set up with Khan Academy accounts. Setting up accounts where both you and your students' caregivers can act as coaches allows both of you to see which videos they watch

how long they spend on each video, and the results of the exercises they complete.

Here is an example of how you can use the Khan Academy function built in to the Learning Compact.

You can see in this image of the Learning Compact that Danielle has failed the standard related to picture graphs and bar graphs.

You can see in this image of the Learning Compact that when you hold your cursor over the top of that standard, a box pops up showing a link to a Khan Academy exercise and video on creating bar charts.

You can see in this image of the Khan Academy website what that link looks like. You can also see from the top right corner that the student is not logged in. Once you create accounts for your students (instructions below), make sure they log in each time they go to Khan Academy so that their work will be recorded! You can also see in the bottom right corner that most exercises in Khan Academy have videos attached to them that students can watch if they need help. Encourage your students to watch these videos, as they can gain "points" for them if they watch them after they log in.

Here are the basic steps to creating an account in Khan Academy. If you already have an account, log in and skip to Step 2. All accounts can be used as both a coach account and a learner account.

  1. Create an account at Khan Academy. To do this, click on the link that says, "Teachers, start here." You can sign up using your Facebook account, your Google account, or a different email address (such as your school email) and password. Once you log in for the first time, you'll be asked to take a pre-test, which your students will take as well.
  2. Click on "Coach" on the upper left side of the screen. (To see what it looks like once your students are connected to you as a coach, watch this!)

  3. Click on "Class Roster" and then "New Class". Type in the name of your class. You can then invite students to your class by their Khan Academy usernames (if they have them) or by their email addresses. For more information on this process check out this document.
    1. NOTE: Students who do not have Khan Academy accounts will need to have an email address to create them. If you don't want your students to have real email accounts, you can create their Khan Academy usernames and passwords individually by clicking on the link "Create accounts for your students without email". You must have a parent's email for each student under 13
  4.  Once your students have created accounts and accepted your invitation to join your class, you can start giving them recommendations and monitoring their progress! For even more information on this process, check out this teacher Quick Start Guide.
  5. Steps 1-3 can be followed by parents as well if they want to monitor their child's activity by clicking the link that says "Parents, start here" on the main Khan Academy page, or you can simply encourage them to sit down with their child as the child completes the assigned Khan Activity exercises and watches the videos.
Student Learning
Compact Training

At this time, all schools should have completed on their own or through a Critical Friends Group meeting, the SLC training.  Based upon that training, teachers should be practicing:

- Building classes

- Adding students to those classes

- Creating CCSS Profiles for classes and individual students

- Developing individual Learning Compacts

Remember, parents are notified when a teacher inputs an "F" (Fail) or an "M" (Mastery) indicator for student achievement within the standards; however, you can always delete the indicators before the parent notification email is sent at midnight.

To our administrators, thank you for your support and leadership as your teachers begin to feel comfortable accessing all elements of the Learning Compact.

Excitement Builds for
May 10 Celebration Showcase

I wonder if inviting parents to 'parties', rather than meetings, will encourage more of them to attend and learn more about supporting their child's academic success? Will positive parent phone calls make a difference with my reluctant parents? What really works, and what tips can I learn from other educators?

For the answers to these questions and to learn other parent partnership ideas, please join us on
