JANUARY WINTER INSTITUTES FOR

SUCCESS PARTNERS COHORT FOUR

In January, the OSL team delivered nine Train-the-Facilitator Institutes across the state from Jacksonville to Miami for our newest cohort. The Institutes had two major goals:

  1. To ensure that all schools had a comprehensive Parent-School Partnership Plan in place for the 2015-2016 school year. A critical element of the development of the partnership plan is the involvement of the parents in the plan. Facilitators were trained on Modules 8-10 at these institutes, and these modules culminate in the creation and distribution of a strong Parent-School Partnership Plan for each school.
  2. Implementation of the Teaching and Learning Exchange. Schools received training on all of the newest functions including attendance, lunch count and enhanced administrative functions.

We received overwhelmingly positive feedback from the schools in regards to their confidence level for involving parents and creating a plan that will focus on student achievement through parent-school collaboration.

Our Year 2 and Veteran Success Partners Cohorts will meet in February

for their Winter Institutes!

Locations: February 2 - Lakeland and Miami; February 3 - Orlando and Tampa; February 4 - Jacksonville and Sarasota

Rehannah Hemmali, principal at Ibn Seena, was able to help her teachers get their student loans forgiven through this program! Ibn Seena was certified not as a Title I school, but rather as a private school that serves a low-income population of 35% or higher. This program allowed them to use the percentage of their K-12 students who were SUFS scholars in order to determine that eligibility.

If you want to do this as well, all you need to do is complete a one-page application and provide a copy of your 501(c)(3) IRS determination letter. They also let you file applications for previous school years. It took a couple of months to process before Ibn Seena was added to the list of eligible schools, so start today!

STEP UP'S BRAND NEW

EDUCATIONAL ADVISOR PROGRAM BEGINS!

The Office of Student Learning's Lauren Barlis and Meredith McKay started 2015 by hosting their first set of parent meetings for the brand new Educational Advisor Program with four schools in Orlando: Leaders Preparatory School, Faith Christian Academy, Mt. Sinai Junior Academy, and St. Andrew Catholic School. This new program is in its pilot year and is designed to support Step Up parents and caregivers as they develop partnerships with their schools. This program provides each Step Up parent at these schools with an educational advisor who will give them personalized support to help them meet the academic and social/emotional needs of their children. Over 50% of the parents at Leaders Preparatory School attended the meeting, and the turnout for the other schools was significant as well, with almost 40 parents attending at Faith Christian Academy. The parents who attended were so grateful and excited to learn about the resources available to them through the OSL, such as help understanding their child's academic and behavioral successes and challenges through the Personal Learning Plans in the TLE. Mt. Sinai Junior Academy had their teachers attend the meeting as well, so the teachers were directly encouraged by their parents to work together with them on the Personal Learning Plans in their next conferences! The parents left the meetings empowered and engaged and ready to partner with their schools to reach their goal of increased student achievement.
