 PROFESSIONAL READING CORNER

"Do we really think teachers will try to integrate technology into their classrooms when encouraged to do so by an administrator who only uses paper handouts and lectures at meetings?"

The December ASCD article by Doug Johnson has three main suggestions:
1) Create staff meeting norms that allow the constructive use of technology.
2) Model effective device management strategies in meetings.
3) Use the tools that teachers are expected to use in the classroom in staff meetings and inservices.

West Coast Christian Academy thinks creatively to get technology for their school!

Fifth graders sharing their Egypt presentations using OneNote.
Cathy Langsdale, principal at West Coast Christian Academy, used a variety of sources to obtain 37 iPads and 3 LCD wall-mounted projectors. The iPads for the students are in sturdy cases that are signed in and out and they get charged and locked away overnight.

How did they do it?
  1. An anonymous donor (known to the school board chairman) paid for a lease-to-own program through Apple and purchased 20 iPads.
  2. Title I funds purchased 11 additional iPads.
  3. Black Friday deals allowed for the purchase of 6 iPads: the deal was to buy one iPad for $299 and get a $100 gift card (the gift cards purchased  the additional iPads).
  4. Another anonymous donor provided 3 wall-mounted LCD projectors.
