Lipstick in School
March is one of those months on the school calendar that teachers and administrators alike struggle to keep their heads up. Whether it was a frustrating February or the "Florida winter time blues," you may be in that same struggle.
With all the anticipation of the last few months of the school year and feeling like you are running a marathon while all you are doing is just trying to make it to Spring Break, it is easy to lose heart.
However, research shows that humor is an important attribute for quality teaching. So, it is good to take some time to laugh. What better time than the stressful month of March!
| Lipstick in School -- Author Unknown According to a news report, a certain private school in Washington was recently faced with a unique problem. A number of 12-year-old girls were beginning to use lipstick and would put it on in the bathroom. That was fine, but after they put on their lipstick, they would press their lips to the mirror leaving dozens of little lip prints.
Every night the maintenance man would remove the lip prints, and the next day the girls would put them back.
Finally the principal decided that something had to be done. She called all the girls to the bathroom and met them there with the maintenance man. She explained that all these lip prints were causing a major problem for the custodian who had to clean the mirrors every night (you can just imagine the yawns from the little princesses).
To demonstrate how difficult it had been to clean the mirrors, she asked the maintenance man to show the girls how much effort was required.
He took out a long-handled squeegee, dipped it in the toilet, and cleaned the mirror with it. Since then, there have been no lip prints on the mirror. There are teachers... and then there are educators. |
Take some time this month to remind yourself why you became a teacher and learn to laugh a little more! I know it will help you make it through March.

Peggy Sia has some remarkable fifth grade moments. "One morning, as we were discussing the meaning of resilience, a student recalled something his coach said to the team during a practice. The things one chooses to do that others will not do today, will enable one to do the things that others cannot do tomorrow. Such powerful words coming from that of a 10-year-old." Every day, they move her to rise before the sun, step out of her slumbering household, and into the hour-long commute to school. With her "Big 3" classroom tools, Peggy unleashes a class culture of empathy-- one in which math problems and grammar lessons unfold with love at the center.

Take time to show your colleagues you care. Greet them with a morning smile, listen deeply in a meeting, or simply ask how they are and mean it.

Spotlight on The Southeastern Conference of SDA Schools
On Tuesday, February 28 Kaethe Perez met with all teachers and administrators of the Southeastern Conference of SDA schools for a two-hour professional development session. Participants reviewed all portions of the Teaching and Learning Exchange and engaged in a school-based Success Analysis Protocol, designed to highlight and analyze the reasons leading up to a successful event or program at the school. Each school left the afternoon with their own chart of success, which is the kernel of the Celebration Showcase event which will be held at their August Professional Development meeting.

Spotlight on Florida Conference of SDA Schools
Thursday, March 5 brought the entire OSL team together with over 230 teachers and administrators from Florida Conference SDA schools for a full day Celebration Showcase. There were 77 presenters during the two Showcase sessions in the morning, sharing successes with one another. The Teaching and Learning Exchange session in the afternoon was divided by grade level teachers, where the Personal Learning Plan for conferencing was highlighted. The Administrator session reviewed all the upcoming features including report card and parent registration portal. The final breakout session contained academic choices:
- Building Classroom Culture and Student Responsibility through Class Meetings- Giving student voice in behavior management
- What teaching methods give the biggest return? Focusing in on Marzano's High Yield Strategies
- Teaching Your Parents How to Read to their Child
- What Makes Great Teachers? Attributes of Quality Teaching
