Next PaperWorks Meeting

Thursday, Nov. 12, 10 AM to noon
St. Philips in the Hills Episcopal Church
4440 N. Campbell Avenue, Tucson
NE corner of Campbell and River roads

Program
Described as sculpture, fiber art and light painting, Joyce Crain's artwork defies categorization. She works with clients including designers and architects to conceive site-specific commissions that integrate with the architecture to sustain a lasting interest for those who will use the space. Employing a range of approaches and a variety of materials, she has created several series and draws from them to produce a unique solution for each project. Influenced by her environment, her work emphasizes interaction with light, movement, and changeability. Check out www.joycecrain.com

Spring 2016 Workshops for PW members

Peter Thomas - "The Miniature Book and the Book Artist" - $220
Thurs., Jan. 14, 1-4pm
Fri., Jan. 15, 9am-4pm
Sat., Jan. 16, 9am-12pm
Workshop will focus on small/tiny books and various ways to tailor binding techniques to that scale. Each day Peter will demonstrate how to make one or two of the innovative miniature book binding structures that he and Donna have developed, and then time will be allocated for creating your own books. (continued online)

Helen Hiebert - "Flexible/Collapsible Paper Structures" - $220
Thurs., Feb. 11, 1-4pm
Fri., Feb. 12, 9am-12pm
Sat., Feb. 13, 9am-12pm
Turn flat sheets of paper into sculptural forms and create a sampling of objects that expand and collapse, open and close, fold and unfold, inflate and deflate. Explore the creation of multi-paneled structures that can turn into books, tubes, tunnels, lanterns and more. * Note: we will be creating new/different structures Helen's last Tucson classes.

J ulie Leonard - "Japanese Marbling and Stiff-leaf/Drum Leaf Book Structures" -$280
Mon., March 14, 9am-4pm
Tues., March 15, 9am-4pm
Wed., March 16, 9am-4pm
We begin this workshop with a day of working with a traditional Japanese marbling technique (but with a twist) called Suminagashi, which means 'floating ink'. On our second and third days, we make models of various stiff leaf and drum leaf binding structures--from the most basic form (quite like commercially produced children's 'board books') to versions that allow for pages constructed with mats and windows. (continued online)

Amanda Beekhuizen - "Letterpress Printing" - $280
Fri., May 13, 9am-4pm
Sat., May 14, 9am-4pm
Sun., May 15, 9am-4pm
The workshop will cover typesetting (both wood and lead), linoleum block cutting, and letterpress printing on the four Vandercook presses at the UofA Book Art and Letterpress Lab. Students will use these foundational skills to print a broadside, small single-sheet book, and/or other printed ephemera of their choosing. (continued online)"
