Voorhees students participate in 2015 Day
at the State House
 
On April 15, seven Voorhees students were among the more than 100 students representing South Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities member institutions at the 2015 Day at the State House to ask the members of the General Assembly for continued support of the Tuition Grant program. 

Makayla Brown, Tyrean Kearse, Ashonde Laidlaw, Jessica Mack, Alton Mosley, Eric Phillips, and K'Darre Ravenell were accompanied by Dorothy Patterson, director of alumni affairs, as they participated in various activities throughout the day at the State House.

Two Voorhees graduates to be commissioned during commencement convocation

During the upcoming commencement convocation at Voorhees College on Saturday, May 9 at 11 a.m., two graduates will be commissioned as second lieutenants in the U.S. Army.

Jamar Smalls, a native of Denmark, S.C., enlisted and served in the South Carolina National Guard throughout his college career. He will be commissioned into the Army Reserves and serve in the Transportation Corps.

Actor Danny Glover as keynote speaker for Voorhees Commencement Convocation

Voorhees College will hold its 118th commencement convocation on Saturday, May 9 at 11 a.m. at the Leonard E. Dawson Health and Human Resources Center. The speaker for commencement will be award-winning actor, producer and humanitarian Danny Glover.

Glover, whose performance career spans more than 30 years, has portrayed a myriad of popular roles such as the blockbuster "Lethal Weapon" franchise in film, to the hit television show such as "ER." He has distinguished himself as one of his generation's most consummate actors.

Voorhees students return to MUSC for second year as interns

Two graduating seniors will be returning to the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) this summer to participate in the Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP), which is a nine-week program that offers undergraduate students the opportunity to work closely with faculty members on cutting-edge biomedical research projects.

Casseanna Holmes and Cheyauna Mitchell, who are both natives of Talbotton, Ga., the hometown of Voorhees' founder, will be participating in SURP for their second consecutive summer.

Tigers' Thomas hopes to be part of winning foundation at Voorhees

Voorhees College pitcher Denada Thomas is just beginning to scratch the surface of his considerable potential.  The 6-3 sophomore from Covington, Ga. has already proven himself to be a workhorse.  He's averaging nearly eight innings pitched per outing and has gone the distance in five of his six starts.  Thomas also leads the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference with a 2.72 earned run average; more than a run better than his nearest competitor, Edward Waters hurler Alan Neader (4.09). 

Though his record sits at just 2-4 this season, Thomas is a big part of the Tigers' plans to climb the conference ranks in the near future.

Seabrook wins GCAC Player of the Week for baseball

Voorhees baseball player Travis Seabrook was named the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference (GCAC) Player of the Week for the week of March 29-April 4. This is the first time Seabrook has received this honor and the first time in Voorhees' history receiving this honor in baseball.

Seabrook, who plays shortstop and catcher, has a batting average is .341 as of April 8. He has six doubles, one triple, 9 stolen bases and 18 RBI'S (runs brought in). He leads the team at bats with 82 and only has eight strikeouts, which is the second lowest on the team.

Baseball players receive Gulf Coast Athletic Conference honors

Voorhees College baseball players Denada Thomas and Marvin Mouzon were recently named to the 2015 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference All-Conference Team.

Denada Thomas, a sophomore from Covington, Ga., finished the season with a 4.47 earned run average. Additionally, he started and completed six games during the season as the pitcher, pitched 52.1 innings while holding his opponent's batting average to .249.

April Alumni Highlight: Darrius Snow

The alumni highlight for April is Darrius Snow, a 2013 graduate, who graduated from Alabama A&M University on May 1 with a Master of Business Administration degree.

In addition to recently receiving a master's degree, Snow will be releasing his first book in May 2015. His book, "Breaking the Cycle: The Story of Darrius Snow," will be released as an eBook in May and the hard copy will be available later in fall 2015.

Emergency management students gaining practical experience

Voorhees students in the emergency management program and members of the Campus Emergency Response Team (CERT) have been getting valuable hands-on experience in the field throughout the academic year.

In April 2015, a group of students, along with Rodney Boyd, assistant professor, traveled to Santee State Park to participate in a practice scenario that involved handling the search for a missing individual.  

Students at Voorhees served on the search team, along with the representatives from the Orangeburg County Task Force, Orangeburg County Office of Emergency Services, Orangeburg County Search and Rescue Task Force, Orangeburg County Special Tactics and Rescue Team and the Branchville Fire Department.
