WriteAway Update
Spring 2015

Two Years and Growing...

Since WriteAway opened over two years ago, 1,827 students from around the province have used the service to receive feedback on draft assignments, tutors have responded to 3,932 papers (and counting!), and the service continues to grow with twelve institutions currently participating and others showing keen interest. Actions and achievements.

Each year WriteAway publishes its Actions & Achievements report, which outlines accomplishments of the previous year and speaks to the value that WriteAway brings to the BC post-secondary sector. This year's focus is on outcomes, answering the question: "What difference does WriteAway make to the sector?" Some highlights from the 2014 report include:

  • One thousand students received writing assistance from tutors throughout 2014. Students find the service very helpful (rating WriteAway 3.57 for helpfulness out of a top score of 4) and describe in positive terms how WriteAway tutors have helped improve their writing.
  • Four new institutions joined the service in 2014: BC Institute of Technology, Emily Carr University of Art + Design, Justice Institute of BC, and Selkirk College. They join early adopter sites Camosun College, College of the Rockies, Douglas College, Kwantlen Polytechnic University, Simon Fraser University, and University of BC.
  • A Master Tutor was hired to provide support for tutors and institutional coordinators; the Master tutor contributes to professional development of tutors and helps to ensure consistency and quality of tutor responses.

WriteAway in 2015 and beyond.

WriteAway welcomes new joiners Okanagan College and Thompson Rivers University in 2015, bringing the current number of participating institutions to twelve. The Training Working Group continues to explore best practices around supporting tutors. For example, the group recently released its Guide for Tutors to Respond to English as an Additional Language Learners. In the larger scheme, the BC eTutoring Concept Committee is hard at work developing a sustainability model to build stability for years to come.

The WriteAway Summer 2015 term will run from May 25th until August 13th.
Join WriteAway: the doors are open to your institution.

WriteAway infrastructure is well established and ready to support new institutions that are interested in joining. Joining WriteAway...

  • Enhances the support your institution can offer students who are struggling with their writing ability, an essential skill for academic and professional careers
  • Extends what your institution can offer on its own: more hours of tutoring available to students, and a far larger pool of tutors to draw from
  • Provides you with infrastructure (both technical and service) that is already established; no need to develop procedures and training from scratch - everything is done for you!
  • Saves your institution money on software licensing and centralized coordination
