On August 1, 2015, St. Petersburg College held a Grand Opening Ceremony for their new Douglas L. Jamerson, Jr. Midtown Center. This community event featured St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman and St. Petersburg College President William D. Law, Jr.

Bay News 9: St. Pete College opens new $14M Midtown Center building       

 

Education and city leaders cut the ribbon outside the St. Petersburg College Douglas L. Jamerson Jr. Midtown Center on Saturday, officially opening up the new $14 million dollar building.

 

"If you want to change your life, it's in walking distance of your community," said Dr. Kevin Gordon, the SPC Midtown Campus provost.   

 

The three-story building is located at 1300 22nd St. S in St. Petersburg, in one of the county's poorest areas. The college waived the application fee for students who registered at the grand opening event.

Janelle Irwin: St. Pete police officers and firefighters receive top honors  

 

First responders in St. Petersburg are officially top-notch cops and firefighters. The City of St. Pete announced Monday that both departments were honored with various awards and designations.

 

The city's Fire and Rescue Department received the top classification from the Insurance Services Office as a result of its Public Protection Classification survey last month. The agency is responsible for protecting more than 260,000 residents and responds to some 54,000 emergencies each year.

St. Petersburg Tribune: Mural tours enhance St. Pete's reputation as 'City of the Arts' 

 

Perhaps nowhere is this city's passion for street art more apparent than on the walls of many downtown buildings, where colorful murals increasingly adorn warehouses, restaurants and other businesses.

The murals have become so popular they are the focus of weekly tours offered by Florida CraftArt, and will be featured during the SHINE Mural Festival in early September - an event expected to draw national as well as local artists to view and create murals in St. Petersburg.

WUSF: St. Pete Free Clinic Builds New Women's Facility 

 

Monica Smith came to the St. Petersburg Free Clinic's women's program in 2012, after drug addiction and a felony record led to her losing custody of her three children. The program helps homeless women gain independence through job training and mentoring.

 

Construction, which started earlier  has started on a new building that will house up to 50 women. Smith, who currently works at the Clinic, will be working as an intake coordinator--helping to determine which women are best suited for the women's program.

Tampa Bay Times: St. Petersburg Police Chief Tony Holloway to co-chair national body camera task force   

 

Police Chief Tony Holloway was appointed co-chair of a national task force on body cameras, the subject of intense debate across the country as Americans increasingly scrutinize the relationship between law enforcement officers and the communities they serve.

 

Holloway joins Sheriff Susan Pamerleau from Bexar County in Texas to lead the American Bar Association's Task Force on Body Cameras.

The Weekly Challenger: No summer learning loss here!  

 

Childs Park YMCA (CPY) held its annual Achieving Great Things Community Spelling Bee Thurs., July 23 in their multipurpose room located at 691 43rd St. S.

The room was packed with proud but nervous parents all waiting in anticipation for their child's number to be called to step up to the microphone. The walk up to the microphone was only a few feet, but with a room full of people watching their every move, it no doubt felt like a mile.

Just in time for the beginning of a new school year, the St. Petersburg College (SPC) Midtown campus is officially open for enrollment, and local residents and community officials couldn't be happier.

"We want you to stay and celebrate with us as long as you can," said Dr. Kevin Gordon, Provost to SPC Downtown and Midtown campuses.

WTSP: Firestone Grand Prix of St. Pete announces 2016 dates        

 

Organizers of the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg announced Thursday the 12th edition of the annual event will be held March 11-13, 2016 with the Verizon IndyCar Series headlining the weekend.

The event is scheduled to run two weeks earlier than the late March weekend it typically occupies due to the Easter holiday.
