Impact of the Quarter
(from the desk of medical director Duane Furman) Recently a friend of Katallasso referred a gentleman to the center for care. This friend had been ministering to a particular gentleman that was incarcerated at York County Prison. During his stay at the prison, the friend reached out to the gentleman and ministered directly to him. They had truly built a close relationship as the love of Christ was poured out upon the inmate through this friend. Unfortunately, the inmate had incidentally cut himself while shaving his face. The prison healthcare team treated the man with antibiotic therapy out of concern for infection. Over the next 5 weeks, the area on his face progressed and he developed a significant painful rash on his entire body with intense body aches. The prison appropriately adjusted his medication to another choice with the addition of further medications with some mild to moderate improvement. As the time passed, the gentleman showed some improvement but not full resolution of the symptoms. I received a call from my friend inquiring if Katallasso could see the patient after his upcoming release date from the prison. He explained that the man has no insurance, is seeking a place to stay and that he had been spending a lot of time sharing the truths of the word of God with him. The man was hungry for the truth and to be loved without the judgment of others. I had the privilege of meeting this gentleman at his first appointment at Katallasso and subsequent follow up examinations. He spoke of his gratefulness for the prison care team trying to assist him and his appreciation that Katallasso could see him so quickly when others may not have. After examining the gentleman, a diagnosis was supported that the healthcare team at the prison had initiated. The patient's treatment plan was able to be adjusted a bit and continued to appropriately treat his condition. Over the past several weeks during follow up examinations, his condition has resolved! As excited as I was for him, he was more excited about the love that he received at the clinic. So much so, that I received a phone call from my friend that shared how much the time at Katallasso impacted the patient. The patient could not believe how he was treated by the entire team at Katallasso. He felt that everyone from the staff to the provider really showed a love for him that blew him away. He was taken aback by how he was treated as he was expecting a typical "free" clinic and instead found Katallasso! He felt that our interest was not just about his health but about him as a person. My friend also commented on how special it is that we have joined him and his family to live missionaly for Jesus through a man that they have grown to love and consider a part of their own family. The greater news is that the gentleman continues to thirst, grow and seek a relationship with God! What a joy to see how Katallasso is reaching beyond healthcare to impact the lives of people for the Kingdom of God. |
