Each year on Holy Saturday during the Easter Vigil,  thousands of are baptized into the Catholic Church in the United States. Parishes welcome these new Catholics through the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA).  Our RCIA program at St. Josaphat is beginning on October 28 at 6:30 pm in the rectory.  All are welcome!

We extend a warm invitation to all who wish to become members of the Catholic faith. Those who go through the RCIA process fall under one of the following categories:
  • Someone who is of another faith and wishes to convert to Catholicism (catechumens)
  • Someone who was baptized in another Christian denomination and wishes to become a member of the Catholic faith (candidates)
  • Someone who was baptized in the Catholic Church, but never received the sacraments of First Holy Communion and Confirmation (candidates)
Catechumens and candidates need sponsors who accompany them through the RCIA process, supporting them, responding to their questions, attending meetings, presenting them to the parish, and generally being friends and guides. Are you interested in being a sponsor? Contact Fr. Wojciech ( [email protected]) or Mary Jane ( [email protected]) for more information.

The RCIA process includes learning sessions about Jesus, our faith and religion, the sacraments, Catholic spirituality, the Mass, the Trinity, Mary, the saints, and Church history. Interesting stuff, especially to learn as an adult! The RCIA group also goes to the Cathedral for the Rite of Election. Culmination is receiving the sacraments and being fully welcomed into the Church on Holy Saturday, during the beautiful Easter Vigil Mass. (Have you been? Why not plan on attending the Easter Vigil this year to support our newest members of the Church?)

We, the congregation at St. Josaphat, also play a role in RCIA. We do the initiating (along with the priest, godparents, sponsors)! We welcome our catechumens and candidates into our community. Please introduce yourself to our newest members when you see them. And please keep them, and all those going through the RCIA process this year, in your prayers!
