Each year, as autumn rolls around, the leaves begin to fall, the wind gets chillier, and St. Josaphat offers our beloved fall tradition, the Blessing of the Pets.

The Blessing of the Pets often occurs on or near October 4th, the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, whose patronage includes animals and the environment.  St. Francis was known
for his deep and extensive dedication to Christ's work, and his love for all things that Christ had created.

St. Francis called for humans to defend and love nature, and often referred to animals as his "brothers and sisters." Even after his death, a series of legends called the Fioretti appeared,  recounting the tales of St. Francis communicating with and preaching to animals in order to bring peace.

The Blessing of the Pets is performed at many parishes to honor St. Francis's wish that humans and animals can coexist in peace and love. Those who have pets know how important the relationship between pet and owner is to both parties. St. Josaphat's Blessing of the Pets began many years ago, and involves a prayer said by the priest or deacon, followed by individual blessings for the animals.

This year, the feast of St. Francis of Assisi falls on a Sunday, so Deacon Pat will offer the Blessing in the Community Park following Noon Mass at 1:15 pm. Feel free to bring friends, neighbors, and pets of all kinds to the Blessing!
