I grew up in Batavia and graduated from Batavia High School in 2005. When I came back to Batavia to start my business with Edward Jones in October of 2011, I knew that it would be very important to get involved with the community, especially one that is as small and connected as Batavia. I started at Edward Jones right out of college (go Illini!) and was an age that is considered very young in my industry. It is a tough business to get started in, and this certainly didn't make it any easier for me, so I figured that anything I could do to network with successful people in town and market my business couldn't hurt. I attended every ribbon cutting, breakfast, lunch, after hours, and awards  ceremony I could, and I sponsored something any time my modest "marketing budget" (my personal checking account) could manage it. And it ended up working better than I had expected! Looking back, the second largest driver of my business has come from referrals of chamber members and meeting people at Chamber functions. In fact, the only thing that was more effective at driving business results was literally going door-to-door on the streets of Batavia for my first two years, but can you guess which was more enjoyable? Well, I've never been bit by a German Shepherd at a chamber event...

I have truly enjoyed my time with the Batavia Chamber and am very honored to be a member of the board of directors. I have been happy with how the chamber tailors benefits so that some things appeal to someone like me, while some are better for small business owners, industrial companies, home based businesses, non-profits, or even Batavia residents that simply want to be more involved. If someone is on the fence about joining the Batavia Chamber, I would ask them to think about what they are trying to get out of their membership, and tell them that their success is only limited by their effort. The chamber is an opportunity, and you will only benefit if you get out there and show people who you are, what you do, and how you do it. If you are willing to do that, then I guarantee you will have successes, and you will get meet some of the most friendly, passionate, and community-minded people in our area.
