Local Transplant Surgeon to Walk 26 Miles for Kidney Disease Awareness Cleveland, OH - A local kidney transplant surgeon has pledged to walk 26 miles to raise awareness of the 26 million Americans living with kidney disease. Dr. Charles Modlin, of Shaker Heights, is a transplant surgeon and urologist at the Cleveland Clinic. Since he began practicing in Cleveland in 1993, he has witnessed firsthand the impact of kidney disease. "I know all too well what kidney disease does to a person, and how it impacts the community," he said. "While I can treat patients with kidney disease, most of these individuals would be much better off avoiding kidney disease in the first place. I'm walking to raise awareness and the support those who have kidney disease in our state." On May 23, 2015, Dr. Modlin will start his epic walk at South Pointe Hospital. The route will take him to Shaker Heights High School, Stephanie Tubbs Jones Family Health Center, Cleveland Clinic Main Campus, Progressive Field and Quicken Loans Arena, Cross Bridge, Lutheran Hospital (West 25th Street), Lakewood Hospital, and will end at Fairview Hospital. The 5 hospitals and Health Center are all Cleveland Clinic locations. This 26 mile walk will raise funds for the National Kidney Foundation's lifesaving awareness, prevention and treatment programs. "For the past 10 years, I have had the pleasure of working with the National Kidney Foundation and I am more committed than ever to doing what I can to fight kidney disease," he said. Dr. Modlin's journey will also promote the upcoming Cleveland Kidney Walk taking place on June 7th at the Great Lakes Science Center. Dr. Modlin serves as the Medical Chairman of the 2015 Cleveland Kidney Walk. "I will be stepping up and stepping out to fight kidney disease, by taking this 26 mile journey," he said. "I challenge others to join me by supporting my effort or joining the Kidney Walk on June 7th. We will be making a profound difference in the lives of those living with kidney disease and those at risk."
