My coaching career is marred by two regrets. The first is that I never met George Halas or Vince Lombardi. My other regret is that I have met so many of the guys who are coaching now.

Skyboxification of Sports
by Andy Dolich
|
A few years ago Harvard professor and author Michael J. Sandel was asked what he would do if he were president of the United States.
"I would lead a campaign against the Skyboxification of American life," Sandel said. "Not long ago, the ballpark was a place where CEOs and mailroom clerks sat side by side, and everyone got wet when it rained. Today most stadiums have skyboxes, which cosset the privileged in air-conditioned suites far removed from the crowd below. Something similar has happened throughout our society. The affluent retreat from public schools, the military and other public institutions, leaving fewer and fewer class mixing places. Rich and poor increasingly live separate lives."
Sandel's viewpoint is a bit simplistic in today's hyper, revenue-generating world of sports. However, the ongoing financial stratification of venue seating areas is changing the dynamic of how fans are consuming the on-field exploits of their sports heroes. The creation of differentiated layers of fans' experiential involvement underscores the days of one-size-fits-all sports venues are over.
Once upon a time, a little kid could wander down on the court or near the dugout and talk to the players. Now, in many venues (especially in the NFL,) you have to pay a hefty license just to buy a season ticket. Fans need the skills of Seal Team Six to access the varied economic neighborhoods in many stadiums. Up close and personal is reserved for Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and other forms of instant social media. Dynamic pricing and secondary ticket marketing have changed the micro-neighborhoods that had existed in many stadiums. Families, friends and perfect strangers grew up going to games and treating each other with respect. Every section was a family section, not one mandated for security reasons.
Pro sports pricing stratification
NFL: teams have on average 13 pricing levels
MLB: 15 pricing levels
NBA: 14 pricing levels
NHL: 12 pricing levels
When I attended the first-ever NFL preseason game at Cowboys Stadium, I was amazed at how my eyes were hypnotically drawn to the Texas-sized HD video board, no matter where I was positioned. It was a potent preview of how games will be consumed in live settings in the future.
Up until 2005, the San Francisco 49ers had one price of $65 for all seats at Candlestick Park. At Levi's Stadium, all fans had to purchase "stadium builder licenses." Nine thousand or so seats between the 25-yard lines carried a license fee between $20,000 and $30,000 per seat, with an average ticket price of $300. Some "club" seats went for $80,000 each. If you wanted the opulence of one of the 165 luxury suites, you would have electronically deposited between $200,000 and $500,000 per season.
Sports are one of the last examples of our town squares. Stadiums and ballparks serve as rallying points for increasingly diverse and financially fragmented communities. These massive meeting places are the front porch of days gone by. As the skyboxification of our favorite stadiums and arenas falls into the hands of the sports revenue metricists, we are losing the glue of unity that binds us together as fans.

Pati McGaffigan,
aka The Maskaraider
Having grown up in Hawaii and now living in San Diego, I am often asked, "How did you become a Raiders fan?" As I was born at Oakland Naval Hospital, I could have said, "I was born this way," but the Raiders were simply a bright star on the horizon in 1953.
As a kid, my Pops insisted I learn how to survive. He taught me how to fish, hunt and camp. An athlete himself, I remember we would watch
sporting events together; baseball, football and boxing matches and I would always pick the boxer wearing black. A
round 1967, I asked Pops, "Why do you root for the Cowboys?" His response was, "I was born in Dallas."
That year the Raiders finished 13-1 and I fell under the spell of Jim Otto, Pete Banaszak, Daryle Lamonica and Freddie Biletnikoff, to name a few. When The Snake joined the Raiders in 1970, I was a feisty teenager and smitten. After watching Kenny lead the team, I knew that if we were down by 12, just give us 90 seconds and we would win the game. Fast forward to the Holy Roller game in San Diego -- I was there!
Two beautiful daughters are fans as well; Danielle is a die-hard Raiders fan, and Nicholle a Chargers fan. My four grandchildren love my character and call me when they catch a glimpse of their Tutu (G-ma in Hawaiian) on TV. And here's a shout-out to my little dog, Honey Girl, who is also a Raiders fan!
During The MaskaRaider's first appearance, I remember being called Maleficent; the funny thing is I never knew who Maleficent was until the movie came out years later. At the recent Cardinals preseason game, a lovely little girl said to her mom, "I didn't know Maleficent was a Raiders fan." How appropriate and now she does.
My character came to life in 2007 and started with a black and silver mask I picked up in Hawaii. I found my hat and horns shortly after that and then all bets were off. A little black dress, player patches showing the pride I hold in my heart for the Legends and future legends, a little bling here, a little bling there, bling bling everywhere! Transitioning into character, start to finish, takes roughly two and a half hours and those 10 a.m. games are tough. If I get that rogue eyelash or dressing out-of-order, add another 20-30 minutes. The payoff -- seeing the joy (and sometimes fear [evil laugh!]) in the eyes of the children and the smiles from Raiders fans across the country, from Seattle to New York City and Hawaii.
My hat is off to all super fans for your dedication, passion and hard work. And much love to my Raiders sister, Mystic Raider, as my partner in all things black and silver.
Pati McGaffigan is among a number of Oakland Raiders super fans who add excitement and delight to attending Raiders games. Photos by Ed Jay.
