Pastor's Pen

The "G" in our discipleship plan stands for grow. If we do not grow in our faith, we become stagnant. Growth means life. Spiritual growth is invigorating.  Spiritual growth is life giving to a community of faith. As United Methodists that means immersing ourselves in the study of the scriptures and becoming not just familiar with them, but intimate with them.

John Wesley called himself "a man of one book." As Methodists, we are challenged to study the scriptures in a variety of ways: Sunday School classes for all ages, Wesley Covenant Groups and short-term (Advent and Lenten Studies) and long-term Bible Studies (Disciple I,II,III, and IV). Some choose to do their own private study by reading the scriptures and using a commentary to assist them, but many feel they gain by joining with others in interpreting God's Word for their lives.

To assist in our growth as disciples and stretch our personal and communal understanding of faith, each week we also have the new addition to our regular Sunday morning bulletin - the W.I.N.G.S. insert.  The W.I.N.G.S. insert is a daily devotional that is meant to enhance your spiritual growth by investigating the scripture preached that week more deeply. The insert contains: a place for notes from that Sunday's sermon; daily readings to dig deeper into the scripture preached; a weekly prayer to help you focus your time of reflection; a suggestion on how you or your family might apply yourself in faith that week; and a prayer list for our church. We encourage everyone to take this insert home and utilize it as a way to grow closer to God. The insert, as well as the weekly sermon can always be found on the website.

As the weeks go by, I hope you will find new and different ways to expand your understanding of your faith and grow in your spiritual formation.  It's my prayer for us all, that as we journey together through this post-modern maze of plurality and divisiveness that we can always come together around our study of scripture and find God's Word for us here and now.  May we be so guided.

Shalom!

Dr. Jane

Join us for the Habitat for Humanity Methodist Build
Saturday, Sept 12th
8AM - 2:30 PM

For 36 years our Baton Rouge Methodist churches have combined efforts to build at least one Habitat for Humanity home. UUMC has been part of this very worthy effort for years, and we look forward to another great build!

This year's build will begin with UUMC on Saturday, September 12th at 8:00 AM with the Blessing of the Build and Workers. Help raise the walls on this new home, join in the blessing, meet the future home owner, and work hard to help those in need in our community! The build will continue until the home is ready to occupy in early November.

We need volunteers to swing hammers, tote materials, raise the walls, provide meals and refreshments, and pass out water. All people 16 years old or older are welcome and needed -- no skill or experience is required. The Habitat workers are patient and wonderful teachers.

The Saturday work day will run from 8:00 AM until 2:30 PM with a break for lunch at 11:30 AM. The sign up sheet will be posted in the Fellowship Hall for volunteers to help with the build and to help provide lunch.

If you would like to support Habitat for Humanity but cannot work on the construction crew or provide lunch for the crews, you can still help by making a contribution to UUMC marked for Habitat for Humanity.

Please join us for a fun filled day of service! Contact Kerry Hawkins with questions about the Work Crew - [email protected] or 766-3574/266-0083. Contact Christ Enright at 266-2134 with questions about providing lunch.
Church Leadership Nominations

Our annual charge conference is just around the corner and that means its time to look at nominations of church leaders for 2016. If you have never served on a ministry team, please prayerfully consider saying yes when you are called by our Lay Leadership Team.  The team will begin its work in September and needs to know who wants a change, who will stay, and who is willing to step up. In the next few weeks, please contact Dr. Jane at [email protected] and let her know your intentions for 2016. Thank you!
Adopt a College Student!

Adopt A College Student is a program that provides the opportunity for church families to be paired with college students during the upcoming school year. Matches will be notified by email or phone by mid-September; then families and students are asked to contact each other to make arrangements for meeting. This doesn't have to be a huge time or financial commitment. Sit together in church, send encouraging notes or text messages, meet somewhere for coffee, lunch, or just to hang out - whatever works for you and your student. The goal is to build a relationship - whatever activity /schedule works for you and your student is fine. Know that you don't have to live close to campus or have any special skills to participate. Some of these "adoptions" will simply be a year-long commitment, while others might result in invitations to future weddings.Thank you for helping us reach out to our college students! Questions? Contact Rev. Colleen at [email protected].

Hear these words from an active UUMC college student whose family participated in an Adopt a College Student program at a University Church in Texas:

From the parents of the adopting family...
"It is a great way to share the love of family with someone who is away from their own family. The best part of this is getting to know each other and to share time in the daily living that families do when they are just hanging out together."

From the child of the adopting family...
"As a kid, I loved getting to hang out with college kids. They would come play with us and eat dinner, and they were the older siblings I never had, (being the oldest in my family). It was cool because they really included us for longer than college. We were in a few of their weddings and were invited to a few baby showers. It was always a treat when our 'Adopted Aggie' was coming over."

And from the college student who was adopted...
"The program has connected me with a caring and faithful family who welcomed me into their home. I feel like through this program I have been able to get further plugged into my faith as well as the church because of the relationships I have developed. I have learned so much from my family, and have shared so many dinners and laughs. I believe this program creates life-long relationship with the family's and students who participate. "

Kids Hope News

Welcome these new Kids Hope mentors:  Jessica Broussard, Colleen Bookter, Susannah Craig, Joe Conine, Hannah Jones, and George Platt!  They are going to be fabulous mentors and wonderful additions to our program.

There's one more New Mentor Training Session coming up:

Sunday, August 30th 1:00-3:00 PM in the UUMC Library

If you've been on the fence...now's the time to make a leap of faith and join us!  It's going to be a great year working with our precious children at University Terrace Elementary.  Just one hour a week (reading, doing some basic math, and painting or playing a game) makes a huge difference in their lives.  We're still in need of male mentors.

I hope to see you there!

DON'T MISS THE LAST DAYTIMERS TRIP EVER!
Deadline to sign up is THIS WEEK!

CANTON, MISSISSIPPI - TOUR OF NISSAN PLANT
Thursday, September 24, 2015

The next and final Daytimers Trip will be to Canton, Mississippi to tour the huge Nissan Plant where Nissan cars and trucks are produced.  Other travel groups have reported that this was one of their best trips and we are hoping to have the same experience.  Nissan provides transportation in their plant; thus, walking will not be a factor.  They have greatly limited the numbers we can accommodate so sign-up early if you plan to go.

Of course, everyone wants to know where we will eat.  The chosen place is Mama Hamils in Madison, MS.  This is a "Southern Cooking and Bar-b-que" buffet so all palates should be able to be accommodated.  Reports from those who have eaten there are quite positive.

Since starting our first trip on January, 2003, this group has had 78 trips, making this number 79.  This is 12 1/2 years of traveling together.  We have been to many, many sites in this area on the day trips and have had a few overnight trips.  It looks like we have "been there, done that," plus many of our regular travelers are no longer interested in repeat locations nor walking and riding long distances.  So, we are declaring this an outstanding effort in Christian fellowship, education and enjoyment, but the end has arrived.  Many thanks to all the travellers who have joined us, to the efforts of the Steering Committee in planning and to Ruthie Fahey, Financial Secretary at University United Methodist, for handling our finances.

Details:  Cost is $50 per person.  We'll board the bus at St. John's UMC, 7:15-7:30 a.m., (pulling out sharply at 7:30 a.m.) and should return around 6:00 p.m.  All travelers (except St. John's Primetimers) will register by calling Carol Calhoun, 769-3243.  The deadline is Saturday, August 29, 2015.  For this group, checks should be made to "UUMC" with "Daytimers" in the "For" field.  As usual, St. John's Primetimers will register by contacting their church office, 766-4594, with a deadline of Thursday, August 27.  Make checks payable to "Prime Timers."  Payment is due upon registration.  Because of the large cost of reserving the bus and other expenses, once you commit to go, you are obligated and there can be no refunds.

NISSAN'S REQUIREMENTS, STRICTLY ENFORCED.
  • No cell phones or cameras; must leave in bus.
  • Long pants.
  • Shirts with at least a 4 inch sleeve.
  • Closed-toe shoes (no sandals or slides)
  • Must be at least 10 years of age (probably no problem here).
  • No shorts (again, probably not a problem).
  • No portable oxygen tanks.
  • Leave all backpacks or large totes in the bus.

Hope you can be with us on our final trip!

W.I.N.G.S: Let Your Faith Take Flight
Through traditional Christian formation, we are transformed. Regular worship; inviting others to join us in fellowship; nurturing that fellowship through small group participation; growing in our understanding of our faith through study; and serving others within or outside the community of faith all combine to help us grow in our faith. By committing to these five practices on a regular basis, we are transformed into the likeness of Christ. We become his disciples and our faith takes flight, soaring to new heights.

Every week in worship your bulletin will contain a special insert entitled "W.I.N.G.S:  Let Your Faith Take Flight". We hope you will take this insert with and use it on a daily basis to stretch your faith and grow and may we begin to see what has always been present at University Methodist - a community of faithful disciples serving God in the heart of the LSU community..
New Ministry Opportunity

We are now recruiting volunteers for Bereavement Teams to serve critical functions for our congregation during planning and implementation of funerals at University United Methodist Church.  We would like to develop two to four teams of four to six individuals each that would assist the families and staff in providing hospitality to guests in the Sanctuary and Fellowship Hall before, during, and after a funeral. Each team would rotate its service for funerals so that the opportunities to serve are distributed evenly between teams.  The teams would serve as follows:

*    Be available for weekday and/or weekend funerals.
*    Serve as an usher to greet guests, hand out Worship Bulletins, direct guests to restrooms, oversee signing of the guest book, and answer questions.
*    Provide water, cups, and tissues to the bereaved family holding visitation hours before the funeral.
*    Provide hospitality with friendly greetings and expressions of concern to the bereaved family and guests.
*    Assist ministers who are doing the funeral as needed such as, lighting altar candles and turning lights/sound on and off.

If you have a desire to serve God by showing compassion to others, please consider this new ministry opportunity.  Call Carol Civils at 975-2034 to discuss your interest.

New Outreach Opportunity:
WATER WITH W.I.N.G.S

The start of LSU football season is less than a month away.  With that, comes Game Day Parking, and with that comes an influx of people who park at or pass-by our church on their way to the game.  This presents a unique opportunity to make our presence known as the church serving God in the heart of the LSU community.

WATER with W.I.N.G.S. is a new outreach ministry in which bottles of ice cold water will be passed out to those who park with us or just pass by.  Special labels will be applied to bottles of water in advance and then distributed by those who have graciously volunteered to staff the parking lots on game days.

This ministry will only begin if there are volunteers who come apply the labels, refrigerate the bottles on Friday afternoons before LSU home games, and make sure the ice chests are ready to load on Saturday.  If you would like to be a part of this unique outreach opportunity, please contact Kyle in the church office at 344-0343 or [email protected].
