EDC Fall Speaker Series

The EDC Student Group is excited to kick off our Fall Speaker Series. This series provides insight into work in the developing world by giving students the opportunity to learn from and be inspired by actual practitioners. The first event will feature three speakers from various backgrounds.
First, we will hear from Dr. Bernard Amadei, founding director and currently one of the co-Directors of the Mortenson Center in Engineering
for Developing Communities. Dr. Amadei is well known in the field of development, co-founded Engineers Without Borders-USA, and has published multiple books. As co-director, he will share his vision for the EDC program.
Second, we will hear about Maji Safi Group from Bruce Maj
Pelz, one of its
founders.
Maji Safi Group is
a disease prevention and health promotion project that empowers
communities in rural Tanzania to fight waterborne and water-related diseases. More information can be found on their website:

Third, we will hear from Andre Houssney. Andre and his family
are Boulder based organic farmers
. On
their farm, Jacobs Springs Farm, they practice "farming God's way," which emphasizes applying ecological solutions to local and global problems. Andre also works with farmers in Zambia on a project called "Zambeezi." They produce a range of organic bee's wax products. More information can be found on his websites:

"Indigenous Peoples and the Jurisgenerative Moment
in Human Rights"

As indigenous peoples have become actively engaged in the human rights movement around the world, the relationship between indigenous peoples and international law, once deployed as a tool of imperial power and conquest, has begun to change. Empowered by a growing body of human rights instruments, indigenous peoples are embracing a global "human rights culture" to articulate rights ranging from individual freedom and equality to collective self-determination, property, and culture. This presentation will identify and provide an account of an unprecedented, but decidedly observable, phenomenon: the current state of indigenous peoples' rights--manifesting in tribal, national, and international legal systems--reflects the convergence of a set of dynamic, mutually reinforcing conditions. In her lecture, Professor Carpenter will argue that the intersection of the rise of international human rights with paradigm shifts in postcolonial theory has triggered a "jurisgenerative moment" in indigenous rights. The presentation will also cover historical and recent developments in international law, as well as federal Indian law, and tribal law.

October 23-25, Understanding Risk Boulder
Understanding Risk Boulder will take
place
October 23-25, 2015
at NCAR's Mesa Laboratory and CU Boulder
campus.
The event will feature panel sessions and workshops on topics related
to risk mapping, citizen science, food security, and other topics as
they relate to efforts to building resilience on Colorado's Front
Range. It will also host a Tech Challenge that connects local
volunteers with area organizations who can benefit from them and offer $
20,000 in contracts to develop open-source tools that can be shared by
all.
