UD's College of Education and Human Development(CEHD) is actively engaged in research that addresses the challenges faced by our schools, children and families, locally and globally. This newsletter focuses on the work underway within our teacher education programs, and initiatives that will benefit children in our community.
Improving
teacher preparation in mathematics
Over the past 15 years, faculty and doctoral students in UD's mathematics education program have been working steadily to determine, measure and improve the outcomes of our teacher preparation programs.
Following the illuminating research by faculty in secondary science teacher education, CEHD has incorporated the coteaching model of student teaching into the teacher preparation programs for early childhood education and elementary teacher education.
Given the pervasiveness of computers, it's important that children learn to create with technology. UD researchers have developed Partner4CS, an initiative that helps middle school and high school teachers introduce computational thinking into the classroom. Teachers learn to use Scratch programming and, partnering with UD students integrate technology into STEM lessons.
Reducing child stress though parenting interventions
Faculty in Human Development and Family Studies received a $2 million five-year grant "Promoting First Relationships (PFR)," to improve parent-child interactions and reduce childhood stress. Finding will be used to increase the effectiveness from PFR home visits by Early Head Start.
