President's Message
Cherise Lakeside, CSI, CDT, Chapter President
Alas, again the holidays are upon us. The year has flown by and Portland CSI has been very busy with our chapter meetings, education/ lecture series, young professional development, certification programs and other events like the golf tournament and Industry Forum. The plans for 2016 are even bigger and better and I am excited to see what our wonderful, dedicated group of leaders comes up with next. I have heard the whispers and they will be releasing the Kraken to go big or go home!

Emerging Professionals Look Ugly
Alicia Clark, CSI-EP, Programs Chair
We had a great turn-out to our first annual Emerging Professionals Ugly Sweater Party. A lot of great conversations were had and connections made between ASHRAE and CSI. Congratulations to our ugly sweater winners, TZ Hristov (ugliest sweater) and Tom Newman (most appropriate sweater).
The Green Dragon was a great venue, and a big thank you to Alexei Holstein and Siemens, our beer sponsor.
We are looking at new ways to start conversations and get more professionals with ten years or less experience involved, so keep an eye out for more events coming up and let us know if you have any ideas.

Emerging Professionals Look Ugly
Jake Lamanna, CSI-EP, Education Chair, Board Director
In November, I attended the Northwest Region Leadership Retreat here in Portland. It was a great opportunity to focus one's thoughts on what leadership is, how best to lead, and how best to be lead. Here are my top three takeaways from that weekend retreat.
- Mentorship as a means to encouraging new member participation. As Education Chair this past year, it has become evident that a major function of the Construction Specifications Institute needs to be facilitating the transfer of knowledge. This could mean across generational divides. Or, quite simply, across the tables around which we all meet at one time or another in the building industry, to solve project specific problems. The recent recession robbed our industry of a lot of expertise in solving design, construction, and building maintenance problems. CSI needs to assume a leadership role as an organization in facilitating the rebuilding and dispersal of that knowledge.
- Know yourself and use that knowledge to better shape your roles as a both a leader and a participant. During the Retreat, we explored our Personality types, similar to Myers-Briggs and Strengths Finder by Gallup. While many resist being categorized using these tests, the benefit they convey is the ability to know yourself in a more objective sense. That knowledge can help us as individuals understand where we best fit in the project delivery process, and as an organization in how we, the membership, work with our leadership and how our leadership can better serve the membership. A leadership without a membership is a very lonely entity indeed. A membership without leadership is a ship without a rudder. Both need the other in order to serve their purpose.
- Communicate your expectations and focus on small achievable tasks to reach the big picture goals. The stress here is on communication as a critical aspect of achieving any goal. It also helps to remember that one does not just 'fly' from Portland to Seattle. Even a short puddle jump requires completing many small achievable tasks in a particular order to be successful. This is even more true when trying to deliver a specific project scope on time and on budget, regardless of whether that project is a closet remodel or a 12-story mixed use development in the Pearl.

2016 Construction Forecast
As we saw in the June construction costs and commodity prices are largely under control. In fact,
looking
at the Construction Inputs PPI section, a surprisingly large number of costs are trending down. The direction of costs is not likely to change if China continues to slow down. Market Indicators are positive with the Architectural Billings Index and the Dodge Momentum Index trending in the same direction.
On January 12, 2016 Cliff Brewis will expand on this information and look toward the future in Portland Chapter CSI Annual Construction Market Outlook. Please put on your calendar now for this not to miss event.
