More Review Manuscripts Published
We recently published 15 review manuscripts in multiple areas of neuroscience.   Our focus is still on publishing original research findings, but we also recognize the importance of synthesizing those findings in reviews.

Data Supplements
We are receiving frequent queries about publishing supplemental data files.   In general, we prefer that authors incorporate data that can be easily typeset in the main manuscript.   However, sometimes it is important to share other types of information with readers.

Our policy permits the publication of supplemental data files that are necessary to provide critical information to readers. Examples are audio or video files and software code. Such supplemental files should be included when submitting a manuscript, so they can be evaluated by peer reviewers.

We also permit the inclusion of a link to an institutional website to share large datasets or detailed protocols that may be periodically updated. Such links should be added as an endnote at the end of the manuscript. Since the information on the institutional server can change over time, it is not considered to be peer-reviewed.

Highlighting Your Manuscript in Social Media
Social Media has become an important mechanism to highlight research findings, both to scientists and the public.   During the past year, we have gathered ~2000 followers of our Facebook , Twitter , and LinkedIn pages, and this following increases daily.

As Social Media continues to evolve, we would like to provide new avenues for publicizing research findings. We generated a Poll to determine new potential Social Media outlets for the Journal .  We appreciate your views on expanding our Social Media.


Send Us Artwork for Our Cover
The Journal of Neurophysiology is still printed, and we update the cover artwork quarterly.   We also use the artwork in a variety of ways to promote the Journal.

This artwork is selected from submissions by authors, and every manuscript acceptance letter contains a solicitation for Cover Art.

Next time you send us a manuscript, think about providing artwork for our cover, to promote your article if it is accepted.


Writing a Successful NeuroForum Article
NeuroForum is our venue for trainees to publish short editorials about recent articles or brief reviews of "hot" areas of neuroscience.  

However, about half of NeuroForum submissions are rejected for a simple reason: they don't bring new perspectives to the field.   Unsuccessful NeuroForum manuscripts summarize the target article(s) or provide technical criticisms without adding new, important insights.

When choosing a topic for NeuroForum and composing their submission, trainees should ask a simple question: will their paper change how others consider a body of work?  If the answer is "yes," you are on the right track.  


Our Renewed Focus on High-Quality Peer Review
We continually strive to improve the peer review of manuscripts submitted to the Journal, with the goal of providing rapid, thorough, and fair feedback to authors.

However, the realities of modern academic life challenge our meeting this objective. It is often necessary to send many invitations to find reviewers for a paper, as the most appropriate reviewers are unavailable. Reviews are frequently discordant, such that editors are forced to balance differing opinions about a manuscript.

Despite these challenges, we have a renewed commitment to treating every manuscript fairly, and have an appeal process for authors who are not satisfied with an editorial decision.

Calls for Manuscripts
Three new Calls for Manuscripts were just announced: Spinal Control of Motor Outputs; Building Neural Circuits: Wiring and Experience; Biology of Neuroengineering Interfaces.

Three other Calls will close soon: Auditory System Plasticity; Glial Cells and Neuronal Signaling; Comparative Approaches in Neurobiology.
