How did you hear about AccessHealth Spartanburg?

I heard about AccessHealth through the Bonner Scholarship that I received. Many of my fellow Bonner Scholars who wanted to be in the health profession told me great things about volunteering at AccessHealth.

What is your favorite part about volunteering in our office?

My favorite part about volunteering in the office is the energy that everyone upholds. We are all there for the same purpose, and when everyone is working together for that purpose, one is able to embrace the difference we are making for those who are a part of AccessHealth. It is amazing to know that even a positive attitude and a smile can make the AccessHealth clients feel a little better about whatever it is that he/she is going through.

How has volunteering impacted your college experience?

Not only has AccessHealth given many beneficial opportunities to its clients, it has also given me many opportunities. Devoting my volunteer hours at AccessHealth has given me the opportunity to receive an amazing education at Wofford College through my Bonner Scholars scholarship. Also, it has opened my eyes to the larger community of Spartanburg that I wasn't aware of before. By interacting with many different individuals of Spartanburg, even those who are Hispanic/Latino like myself, it has shed light on the larger population of my community that I don't interact with on a college campus. It is very important to me to be aware of my surroundings so that I can try to make a positive impact where it is needed.

What would you say to someone who is interested in volunteering at AccessHealth Spartanburg?

For someone who wants to learn how to work with and for the people, AccessHealth is the place to be. The kind of work that is done at Access Health is priceless to those going through hardship. By keeping an open mind and compassionate heart, any volunteer could be a part of the AccessHealth team.

Cleveland Park Playground Build
On October 23, AccessHealh staff members donated four hours of their time to volunteer with the Cleveland Park playground construction. The staff worked together with students, firefighters, EMS, city employees, non-profit groups, and many other dedicated volunteers. It was a peaceful day where community members were able to offer their support and look forward to the future.

November 19th is the American Cancer Society's "Great American Smokeout." This is an annual event sponsored by the American Cancer Society where smokers throughout the country are encouraged to stop using tobacco. It is a tradition that dates back to the 1970s in Massachusetts where "people were asked to give up cigarettes for a day and donate the money they would have spent on cigarettes to a high school scholarship fund." Smoking is still prevalent today and "is responsible for 1 in 5 deaths in the US." For more information and statistics, visit the following link: The Great American Smokeout.
