November 19th is the American Cancer Society's "Great American Smokeout." This is an annual event sponsored by the American Cancer Society where smokers throughout the country are encouraged to stop using tobacco. It is a tradition that dates back to the 1970s in Massachusetts where "people were asked to give up cigarettes for a day and donate the money they would have spent on cigarettes to a high school scholarship fund." Smoking is still prevalent today and "is responsible for 1 in 5 deaths in the US." For more information and statistics, visit the following link: The Great American Smokeout. |
