| Baltimore Cuba 10-Year Partnership Celebration

"For the last few days we have gathered in public to sing out loud about our church with our American friends. We could not have done that, even a few years ago. The workers at the hotel stop and ask us what this is about - and we tell them to come to our church and find out! The Presbytery of Baltimore made this possible for us. It is not about projects, it is about relationships."
And so it is.....
This statement was offered up by a Cuban Elder to our group of 50 or so Cubans and Americans during our Encuentro 2015 (conference). This was our largest gathering ever! His statement is important for at least two reasons; it marks an historical moment in time whereby Cubans and Americans can publically do church together. Secondly, it tells us that our Cuban Sisters and Brothers finally have grown to trust their American partners. We have proven to them that we respect their systems and their processes and that we try to work with them from a place of love and trust.
The Presbytery of Baltimore - El Centro Presbytery's fourth Encuentro was held in Sancti Spiritus, Cuba. After our 20 representatives visited individual congregations for a few days, we came back together as a large group. For four days, we studied and prayed and worshiped and laughed and sang and danced. During this time, we celebrated 10 years of Presbytery partnership and signed a new five year agreement as part of an inspirational worship service. We now have seven Church-to-Church partnerships under the Presbytery umbrella!
We are sometimes asked, "Why do we have mission partnerships on the Presbytery level?" To answer this, we point to our vision statement, which ends with "equipping our congregations to thrive spiritually and to become Apostles of Reconciliation". Truly - we lived this for one week in Cuba!

The Commission on Reconciliation is convening a Symposium on hunger alleviation and food justice on Wednesday, Mar. 18 for representatives from Presbyterian congregations with hunger ministries, local and state non-profit organizations. Save the date! The 2015 Pastors' Retreat will be held at Bon Secours Retreat Center from Wednesday Apr. 22 to Thursday Apr. 23. Our featured presenter, TE Theresa Cho (Saint John's Presbyterian Church in San Francisco) will discuss how to integrate art in worship.

The Spire Series, sponsored by First & Franklin Presbyterian Church, presents solo violinist Kurt Nikkanen, in an all-Bach concert at 8pm on Friday, Mar. 6. A Meet-the-Artist reception will follow the performance. Tickets are $20 General Admission; $10 for students. For details, click Nikkanen.
Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church will sponsor a free workshop on domestic abuse designed for clergy and lay leaders at 6:30pm on Tuesday, Mar. 10 featuring the Rev. How Do We Restore the Chesapeake Bay? Dr. Beth McGee, the Senior Water Quality Scientist at the Chesapeake Bay Foundation will present an overview of the science and policy surrounding efforts to clean up the Chesapeake Bay and describe the economic benefits of restoring the Bay.
