Search Team  Appoi nted to Select  an
Interim General Presbyter

The Steering Cabinet of the Presbytery of Baltimore is responsible for filling the position that Craig Palmer held.  Vice-Moderator James Parks, Stated Clerk Catherine Blacka and Commission on Reconciliation Chair D aris Bultena are serving as the Interim General Presbyter Search Committee of the Steering Cabinet.

The Steering Cabinet decided that the current vacancy called for a different type of search than the one that was conducted when Craig was sought.  Then the position was designated as "transitional" with the option that the Transitional General Presbyter could possibly stand for the permanent General Presbyter role.  With Craig's departure, we decided that the position would be re-cast as an Interim General Presbyter and that the Interim General Presbyter would not be able to stand for the permanent position.

The Interim Search Committee has been working to assess what the needs of the presbytery are in this particular moment.  Conversations have been held, interviews have been conducted, and conclusions have been reached.  Those conclusions have informed the job description for an Interim General Presbyter and have resulted in three clear priorities.

The Committee is clear that the Interim General Presbyter shall "embody and exemplify the diversity, collegiality, and unity we value as the Presbytery of Baltimore." That person also must be able to "grasp the unique nature of our complex system and embrace that as an asset of the Presbytery."  The three priorities include helping us to:

  1. attain clarity and transparency over finances;
  2. ascertain an understanding of the tasks needed to carry out the vision and how best to match those with the skills of our staff and volunteers; and,
  3. have a deep understanding of the vision without an extended learning curve.

The Committee is now ready to receive names and Personal Information Forms or resumes of Teaching or Ruling Elders who might be interested in applying for the position.  We hope that by July the Committee, with the Steering Cabinet, will have someone in place and actively serving the Presbytery.  Click hereto view the detailed job description and application materials. You may also mail Daris Bultena at [email protected] and he will gladly send it to you.  We have shared this information with the Synod of the Mid-Atlantic and the Mid-Council Relations office of the Presbyterian Mission Agency of the General Assembly.  This is an invitation to those nearer who might be interested in the position.

Should you have questions or further interest, please contact Daris Bultena.  He can be reached via the email above, at Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church (410.679.3322) or by cell phone/text (443.621.8022).   Meanwhile, the Interim General Presbyter Search Committee asks for prayer as it continues its work.

A Message from Vice Moderator James Parks

Thanks to those members of the ad hoc group who met last week to discuss ways to bring healing to our communities in Baltimore City.

It's clear that we are still committed to making lasting change and many congregations are beginning to take steps to create long-term relationships with their communities that could foster reconciliation and help their church to thrive better.  Here are just a few examples: Faith Presbyterian Church joined with other churches and organizations in the neighborhood for a "Freddie Gray and You" forum with youth and residents; Hunting Ridge Presbyterian Church and other congregations members of the Interdenominational Ministerial Group held a forum with youth in West Baltimore; finally, Deb Milcarek, Associate for Reconciliation, and I will attend the stated meeting of National Capitol Presbytery tonight to discuss ways we can partner to address the issues that exist in both our presbyteries.

Meanwhile, at our meeting May 19, we began reviewing nearly 140 responses from small group discussions held at the May 7 Presbytery Gathering.  Read more. . .
