Basic Recipe for Parent Advocates
By Mary Lovell

As parents, we are our children's first advocates* - their first voice. Most parents advocate for their children in some way, but for those of us with gifted children, we often come to that point quite by accident. We find our preschooler reading while his age mates are learning their letters or our third grader acting out in class because she finishes her work before her classmates. What is a parent to do when their child becomes very frustrated when the pace in school doesn't keep up with their needed rate or rage to learn? Voila  - this is often the time when a parent recognizes that their child's differences need a voice to insure that they do not lose their joy to learn.

SMPG: My Gifted Education
by Carol Raymond

Several years ago, I enrolled in my first graduate course in gifted education - "The Social and Emotional Needs of Gifted Learners." At that point, I did not have plans to continue an advanced degree in gifted education; I simply sought to understand my eldest stepdaughter better. The Gift of Emotional Overexcitabilities
By Regina Hellinger

Recent vulnerability research by Brene Brown (Brown, 2010) has shown that the origin of all creativity, innovation, and authenticity is vulnerability. For many gifted individuals it is their emotional overexcitabilities that are the source of their greatest vulnerabilities. The discovery that these vulnerabilities are also the birthplace of their ability to use their gifts in creative and innovative ways serves as a wakeup call to reassess our perceptions on these overexcitabilities and how we address them in our young gifted.

Voices
By Lisa Hancock

Giftedness has always been part of my life, but there was a long period during which I didn't realize it. Looking back as an adult and parent of four gifted kids, I can now see how being gifted affected every stage of my life.

"Voices" is dedicated entirely to you and your observations as a gifted individual.  Want your voice heard? Share your personal experience and insights as a gifted and talented child, teen, adult or elder, and we may just feature your story here in SENGVine.   We will consider a variety of different submission including stories, articles, poetry and art so don't be shy.  Submit yours to: [email protected]
