Fresh & Local
You'll find plenty of local goods provided by the fresh faces from Waldo Burton Memorial School. These young gentlemen participate in Longue Vue's Cultivating Communities, a three-part program which develops skills in gardening, entrepreneurship and philanthropy. Through this year-long curriculum, students learn to grow vegetables and herbs, sell the produce and value-added products at farmers markets, learn about cooking and careers with a professional chef, and research local non-profits and organizations. The final segment of the program culminates with the presentation of a check to the nonprofit selected by these hardworking students. This week they'll have kale, mustards, citrus, green garlic, succulents, herbs, and more!

  • The New Orleans Housing Authority's Lot Next Door Program relaunched Monday morning.
  • There are 2,200 vacant lots up for grabs across the city that NORA owns and that people can buy if they meet certain requirements.
Those who share a boundary to the left, right and back with an available NORA lot can now go online to fill out paperwork expressing interest in buying them.
NORA leaders said to be eligible to buy the lot, you cannot have any tax liens on your property and all properties you own in the parish must be up to city building and health codes.
NORA CEO Brenda Breaux said this program is great way for people to get more land to make extensions of their home.
Breaux says through the program, home owners can get what's called a growing home credit worth $10,000 if they make improvements to the lot such as landscaping
Right now, the program is slated to continue indefinitely.
"This relaunch allows the program to stay open. So it's a rolling program as individuals might acquire their own house or do something else and there's an adjacent NORA lot that we don't have out for another disposition, we're making it available for the Lot Next Door Program," said Breaux.

The Historic New Orleans Collection's new exhibition "Awash with Color: Seldom-Seen Watercolor Paintings by Louisiana Artists, 1789-1989" features some of the institution's extensive holdings in watercolors, which are displayed infrequently due to the delicate nature of the medium. The free exhibition will be on display in THNOC's dedicated art galleries, the Laura Simon Nelson Galleries for Louisiana Art at 400 Chartres St., through May 21, 2016.
Watercolor is a versatile and easily transportable medium. Artists in the 19th century used it to paint landscapes while outdoors and to make preliminary sketches before executing an oil painting. In the 20th century, the medium became more popular for completed paintings.
Applied in delicate, transparent layers, watercolor captures the effects of light on color, as seen in the translucency of breaking waves, reflections in a puddle of rain on cobblestones, sunlight on crisp fabric and luminous skin. It can also be a difficult medium to work with-it dries quickly, and brushstrokes cannot be reworked, as with oil paint.
Approximately 70 watercolor paintings by artists both well known, such as Walter Anderson and Alfred Jacob Miller, and more obscure, including Joseph Richards and Jeannette Boutall Woest, are on display in "Awash with Color." The subjects of the paintings include landscapes, genre scenes, architectural drawings, advertisements, Mardi Gras float designs and portrait miniatures on ivory. Artists' sketchbooks, a paint box and a porcelain watercolor tray help make the creative process more tangible for visitors.

American children's author and illustrator, Tomie dePaola, said, "Reading is important, because if you can read, you can learn anything about everything and everything about anything." What better way to instill a love of reading to a child than to read to them everyday.
St. Bernard Parish library strives to bring reading alive to children through interactive storytelling. "Tales on Tuesdays" will return this winter and spring starting Jan. 26 and will run through May 3 at 1 p.m. and again at 5:30 p.m. The program takes place at the Chalmette branch at 2600 Palmisano Blvd.
The earlier program is geared for younger listeners. The evening session is open to children of all ages, but will target school-aged children. This program is free and sessions run about 45 minutes. "Tales on Tuesdays" is intended to introduce children to literature through storybooks, poetry, flannel boards, finger plays, and participatory activities.

NEW ORLEANS -  Mayor Mitch Landrieu was joined by Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards and City, State and Federal officials to celebrate the City of New Orleans award of $141.3 million from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)'s National Disaster Resilience Competition (NDRC). HUD's competition is designed to help state and local communities recover from past disasters while improving their ability to withstand future extreme events through strategic community investments.

New Orleans is one of only 13 jurisdictions out of 67 eligible applicants to be awarded funding from NDRC and the award is the second largest nationally.

New Orleans' winning proposal - Reshaping the Urban Delta - calls for the creation of the city's first comprehensive resilience district in Gentilly with projects that invest in innovative and creative solutions so that the people, culture and infrastructure can thrive. A focus on Gentilly presents opportunities to leverage existing projects, to reduce flood risk and to support the area's recovery and revitalization.

"New Orleans is our nation's most immediate laboratory for innovation and change and this award demonstrates that we are a world leader in building a better, stronger and more resilient community," said Mayor Mitch Landrieu. "This National Disaster Resilience Competition award will provide a transformative opportunity for even more investments in infrastructure that will yield vibrant and equitable communities. I want to thank HUD for recognizing New Orleans' potential as a model for global resilience and our partners with 100 Resilient Cities and the Rockefeller Foundation for their partnership in helping our city achieve this success."

City to Host Trainings for Contractors on 'HireNOLA' and DBE Program Rules

NEW ORLEANS - The City of New Orleans will continue the series of free seminars to provide training on its new Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) contract and labor compliance software systems and HireNOLA policy. The trainings are open to the public and will be held at Delgado Community College City Park Campus, H. Giles Hall, 615 City Park Ave., New Orleans, LA  70119.NEW ORLEANS -

In October 2015, the New Orleans City Council passed Mayor Landrieu's 'HireNOLA' policy that requires contractors with city contracts valued at $150,000 and above to prioritize Orleans Parish residents when hiring. HireNOLA requires contractors to use the City as its first source for recruitment, referrals and placement of new hires on applicable contracts. It will also require contractors working on applicable projects to demonstrate good faith efforts to hire local and disadvantaged workers.  Applicable contracts include any contract to which the City is a party for construction, alteration or demolition of public buildings or public works of the City of New Orleans in excess of $150,000; and any Cooperative Endeavor Agreement to which the City is a party and through which the City provides tax incentives for economic development projects in excess of $150,000.

In December 2015, the New Orleans City Council unanimously passed Mayor Landrieu's DBE rules strengthening the City's policy to ensure  participation of disadvantaged business enterprises (DBE) in City contracts. The new rules reform the DBE program, bringing it in line with best practices from around the country. It is the product of collaborative work with stakeholders from the DBE and prime contractor community. Revisions include:

*  Restrictions on DBE subcontracting and modification of DBE firms;
*  Strengthened Good Faith Effort requirements throughout the life of the contract; and
*  Establishment of penalties for non-compliance.

Champagne Education Series, Session 1:  "Champagne 101 v2.0", February 16, 6:30pm
In our exciting series last year, Dr.Michael Knisley took us from basics to advanced in 4 sessions and I think it is safe to say that everyone who attended left with a deeper understanding and appreciation of the region, the wines and the producers. Well, all of us, especially Michael, had so much fun that we are ready to begin again with a new focus and, of course, new wines! In this second version of his basics class you'll learn that
Champagne is wine first and foremost.  But, it is also the most complex category out there.  Because of this, it is often misunderstood, overlooked, and "relegated" to celebratory occasions rather than being enjoyed on its own merits as a wine.  This overview of the basic styles of champagne will help you understand why this is such a special type of wine, make sense of the complexity of its production and styles, and appreciate why it shouldn't just be served for special occasions. $45 and reservations are required.  You can sign up for this class here, Champagne 101 v2.0; or the entire series of 5 with a 10% discount here:

Carol Langston Talks about College Financial Aid

METAIRIE, LA - Carol Langston, PhD, director of College Guidance at Metairie Park Country Day School, will discuss financial aid possibilities for college students  at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 27, at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 W. Napoleon, Metairie.

This presentation is free of charge and is open to the public. Registration is not required.

Langston will discuss the College Scholarship Service Profile, generally referred to as the CSS Profile, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid program, generally referred to as FAFSA, and Louisiana's Taylor Opportunity Program for Students, generally referred to as TOPS.

The CSS Profile is an application distributed by the College Board that allows college students to apply for financial aid. It is designed to give private member institutions of the College Board a closer look into the finances of a student and family. The information provided in the CSS Profile is sent to colleges or universities that the student specifies. This document is required at more than 300 U.S. colleges.

FAFSA is a form that can be prepared annually by current and prospective college students (undergraduate and graduate) to determine eligibility for student financial aid. In addition to demographic and financial information, applicants are asked to list as many as 10 schools to receive the results of the application once it is processed.

TOPS provides Louisiana high school graduates meeting specific eligibility requirements with a scholarship if they choose to attend a Louisiana public or private college or university. It has four award components. Students must apply for TOPS using the FAFSA.

The above forms must be completed and submitted before March in order for students to receive scholarships at most colleges in Louisiana and around the country.

Cynthia Nobles Talks About Her New Work,

The Confederacy of Dunces Cookbook

METAIRIE, LA - Cynthia Lejeune Nobles, author of a new cookbook titled The Confederacy of Dunces Cookbook: Recipes from Ignatius J. Reilly's New Orleans, will talk about the book at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 28, at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 W. Napoleon, Metairie.

The presentation is free of charge and is open to the public. Registration is not required.

In John Kennedy Toole's iconic novel, Ignatius J. Reilly is never short of opinions about food and he's never far away from his next bite. Whether issuing sarcastic comments about canned food as a perversion, or taking a break from his literary ambitions with an occasional cheese dip, this lover of Lucky Dogs, cafe au lait, and wine cakes navigates 1960s New Orleans focused on gastronomical pursuits.

A Confederacy of Dunces Cookbook offers recipes inspired by the fare of Ignatius and his cohorts. Through a narrative and almost 200 recipes, Nobles explores the intersection of food, history and culture found in the Pulitzer Prize winning novel, opening up a new avenue into New Orleans' culinary traditions.

The book includes dishes inspired by Ignatius' favorites: macaroons and "toothsome steak" as well as recipes based on supporting characters, such as Officer Mancuso's Pork and Beans and Dr. Talc's Bloody Marys. A guide to the D. H. Holmes Department Store's legendary Chicken Salad, the likely offerings of the fictitious German's Bakery, and an in-depth interview with the general manager of Lucky Dogs round out the cookbook.

Cynthia Nobles is a food columnist for the Advocate of Baton Rouge, New Orleans and Acadiana. She is the author of The "Delta Queen" Cookbook and serves as series editor for The Southern Table, She is a member of the Newcomb College Culinary History Writers Group. She lives in Baton Rouge.

  7. 1/2 tsp Ground Pepper
  8. 4 oz Can of Green Chilies
  9. 14.5 oz Can of Diced Tomatoes
  10. 1/2 tsp Salt (or more to taste)
  11. 2 Cups Shredded Colby/Jack Cheese
  1. Soak the dried pinto beans in cold water overnight. (check for rocks and funky beans)
  2. After beans have soaked, drain and rinse the beans.
  3. Transfer to a large pot and add the 6 cups of water or chicken stock.
  4. Bring the beans to a simmer over medium heat.
  1. Add the cumin, chili powder, onion powder, garlic powder and pepper.
  2. Decrease heat to medium/low, partially cover pot with lid. (leave the lid cracked)
  3. Continue to lightly boil. Check beans after an hour of cooking. Beans should be cooked within an hour and a half or so.
  4. The beans will be soft and there will be some liquid still remaining. (if the liquid has boiled off, add a bit more)
  5. Add the green chilies and diced tomatoes.
  6. Continue cooking with the lid off for 15-20 minutes while stirring frequently. (watch it very closely because it will burn)
  7. Once most of the liquid has cooked off, decrease heat to low.
  8. Add 1/2 tsp salt and mash with potato masher for a chunky dip. Or use an immersion blender for a smooth bean dip.
  9. Add the shredded cheese and stir until melted.
  10. Taste and add more salt if needed.
  11. Serve hot, room temperature or cold.
Notes
  1. This recipe yields approximately 7 cups

Tasting Notes
With tempting aromas of dark cherry, blackberry and spice, Zin-phomaniac is a complex, full-bodied wine with juicy, approachable flavors of ripe blue-purple fruit and dark semi-sweet chocolate. A kiss of vanilla and a touch of brown baking spice add depth to the long, satisfying mouthfeel.

Sweet Charity
Directed by Gary Rucker

Have you ever known a girl who wanted something so badly that she tried too hard to get it?
The Tony Award Winner for Best Choreography & Best Revival of a Musical, Sweet Charity is a tender and poignant, yet hilariously funny, look at the adventures (or rather misadventures) of Charity Hope Valentine in the ways of love. The great Gwen Verdon starred in the original Broadway production under the direction of the legendary Bob Fosse, and the delightful Shirley MacLaine popularized the role with the 1969 film. This bright and sophisticated comedy boasts a smart book by Neil Simon, incredible dancing and wonderful music numbers, including Big Spender, Rhythm of Life, and If They Could See Me Now. Inspired by the pulses, sounds and characters of 1960's NYC, Sweet Charity entertains through the exhausting journey of finding love not only from the world, but also from within. Dream your dream!

Box Office Hours of Operation are Tuesday - Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Dine with Mosquito Supper Club
Two charming hosts (and fantastic cooks) serve up authentic Cajun food, family-style.
Martin brings her family's food from Chauvin, LA, to the city in a family-style setting. Platters are set down on the table, and everyone digs in. It's a dining style New Orleanians relate to, whether they're from Irish, German, Italian, or Afro-Caribbean families. Cajun music fills the dining room (limited seating, reservations only) as guests enjoy a five-plus course meal.

A sample menu, this one for fall, is quintessentially Cajun: doughy "Lagniappe Rolls" with Steen's Butter (as if butter isn't decadent enough, this one is laced with cane syrup from Abbeville, LA); crispy eggplant fritters; gumbo with shrimp, crab, and okra; cucumber and tomato salad with Steen's vinaigrette; stuffed Lousiana crabs; and blackberry dumplings with "Pop Rouge" ice cream for dessert. (Local folk of a certain age may remember the old "Pop Rouge" strawberry/cream soda from Lafayette.)

This fall, Mosquito Supper Club commences on Thursday nights at 810 N. Rampart Street, a light-filled, second-story space in the French Quarter with a can't-beat-it view of Armstrong Park. Dinner begins promptly at 7:30 p.m. Go to their site's reservations page to book your seats... and meet your adopted Cajun family.

Extra helping: Michot and Martin also run Curious Oyster Company in St. Roch Market, open daily, if you can't make it to a supper club event.

THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA.
The story takes place in Italy in the summer of 1953. Margaret Johnson, the wife of an American businessman, is touring the Tuscan countryside with her daughter, Clara. While sightseeing, Clara, a beautiful but surprisingly childish young woman, loses her hat in a sudden gust. As if guided by an unseen hand, the hat lands at the feet of Fabrizio Naccarelli, a handsome Florentine, who returns it to Clara. This brief episode, charged with coincidence and fate, sparks an immediate and intense romance between Clara and Fabrizio. Margaret, extremely protective of her daughter, attempts to keep Clara and Fabrizio apart. As THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA
unfolds, a secret is revealed: in addition to the cultural differences between the young lovers, Clara is not quite all that she appears. Unable to suppress the truth about her daughter, Margaret is forced to reconsider not only Clara's future, but her own hopes as well.

The Outlet Collection at Riverwalk® Celebrates Return of Lundi Gras on the Mississippi
with Free Music, Fireworks and Arrival of Rex, King of Carnival
All-Star Entertainment Line-Up Features Cowboy Mouth, Bonerama and Big Sam's Funky Nation

NEW ORLEANS (January 26, 2016) - On Monday, Feb. 8, The Outlet Collection at Riverwalk®, a development of The Howard Hughes Corporation® (NYSE: HHC) will once again celebrate Carnival with Lundi Gras on the Mississippi. The public event will feature live music, fireworks, local food vendors and the official arrival of Rex, King of Carnival to the Mardi Gras festivities. Rex, King of Carnival, and his entourage will arrive at Riverwalk's Spanish Plaza aboard elegantly decorated vintage railroad cars.

In addition to the festivities beginning earlier than in previous years, this year's event boasts several new features, including the addition of a fourth band, Cowboy Mouth, to the entertainment line-up. The legendary New Orleans rock group's Lundi Gras performance will also be filmed as part of a reality television show. Afterwards, for the first time in history, Rex will arrive at the Poydras Street entrance, as opposed to Canal Street.

Upon arrival, Rex will greet the thousands of visitors that have traditionally gathered at Riverwalk's Spanish Plaza to watch Mayor Mitch Landrieu, other dignitaries and Rex celebrate Lundi Gras.

For many years, revelers witnessed The King of Carnival's arrival aboard the Royal Yacht (a Coast Guard cutter). However, since 2015, the event has added a dash of historical perspective by recreating scenes previously witnessed in the late 1880s when Rex chose to arrive by train rather than by river.

The 2016 Lundi Gras on the Mississippi entertainment schedule is as follows:

11:15 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.                  Cha Wa Mardi Gras Indian Funk Band
1 - 2:15 p.m.                                      Big Sam's Funky Nation
2:45 - 4 p.m.                                      Bonerama
4:30 - 5:45pm                                    Cowboy Mouth
6 p.m.                                                   Arrival of Rex, King of Carnival | Rex meets Zulu | Mayor Landrieu turns over keys to the city

Lundi Gras on the Mississippi at Riverwalk's Spanish Plaza is a free music event for attendees of all ages. Food and drinks will be available for purchase. No ice chests, skateboards, bicycles, pets or glass are allowed on Spanish Plaza during events.  Petit Théâtre Du Vieux Carré sets the stage for
an American Panto, Sleeping Beauty
NEW ORLEANS, LA -- In this world premiere adaptation of Sleeping Beauty, comedy meets Carnival in a vivid re-imagining of the classic fairy tale. Directors Jon Greene and Maxwell Williams draw inspiration from the timeless and adored tradition of British Panto to create a brand new tradition for the young and young at heart.
Audiences will be treated to an experience that is both new and oddly familiar. The original script, by Jon Greene, has been crafted specifically for the City of New Orleans and Le Petit Théâtre, and the attitudes and relationships have been updated to suit the era in which we live.
"The tone of this production is very much comedic and includes slapstick, wordplay, topical and local jokes, as well as a healthy dose of call-and-response audience participation. Like any good Panto, this show prides itself on being "fun for the whole family!" says playwright Jon Greene.

By bookending the Mardi Gras season with Sleeping Beauty, Le Petit hopes to add to New Orleans' grandest tradition with a show thriving with similar spirit. The cast of Sleeping Beauty includes: Bob Edes (Widow Chockablock), Mary Pauley (Malifica), Jessica Lozano (Princess Calliope), Rahim Glaspy (Prince Stewart), Alex Smith (ManFred), Andrew Vaught (Frog), and Keith Claverie (Dudley J. Storyteller).
www.LePetitTheatre.comNew Orleans' most historic playhouse, Le Petit Théâtre Du Vieux Carré, has played an important role in our nation's theatrical history since 1916.  Located just off of Jackson Square, we have called our current stage home since 1922
