2015 Tour de Northside Helps Highlight Transformations in the Area TourdeNorthside

On September 26th, the Greater Northside Chamber of Commerce and partners hosted the 2015 Tour de Northside - a  15-mile bike tour highlighting various spots of the Northside community. Over 300 riders participated in this yearly event.

This area is in the midst of a transformation from a warehouse district known for crime and lacking in economic opportunities, to a more vibrant community offering transportation through the new Metro Light Rail system, new homes, retail options, jobs and recreational spaces to residents.

In preparation for the tour, HLM sponsored various Bike Friendly Facility signs which were displayed at some of the stops on the route which provided visitors with safe places to park their bikes.

Target Hunger in partnership with Randalls hosted "Will Walk 4 Food", their first 5K on Saturday, September 19, 2015 at the Denver Harbor Multi-Service Center in Houston, TX. There were several hundred people in attendance, united to bring awareness and raise funds to address hunger and food insecurity in Houston.

HLM shared a booth with our Harris County Public Health & Environmental Services partners from WIC, DSRIP and Mosquito Control, and provided visitors with important information about nutrition, physical activity, and health/safety in general.
HLM Convenes First Healthcare Section Action Team Meeting HealthcareSector

At our last HLM Collaborative Meeting, which focused on the healthcare sector, several attendees signed up to be on a Healthcare Sector Action Team. On Monday, October 12th, we convened our first meeting with 16 individuals in attendance, representing 10 organizations.

The purpose of the meeting was to identify next steps to the strategies that were prioritized by the group through a previous survey. These strategies include: 1) Collecting data on social, economic, and community conditions in their area, and 2) Community-Clinical Linkages.

The group plans to meet on a monthly basis to begin work on this. To join this group or learn more, contact Tanweer Kaleemullah at tkaleemullah@hcphes.org.
