Size up your competition

Rig tuned, foulies packed and no snow in forecast - it's looking good for the first start of our offshore sailing season on Lake Ontario. Anticipation is building for a great weekend of competitive sailing on Lake Ontario to kick off 2015 LOOR events, beginning with the Susan Hood Trophy Race on Friday night, followed by the first LOSHRs race of the year in Sunday's course race. Who's doing both?

An awesome overnighter: Susan Hood Trophy Race

You'll make history at this year's Susan Hood Trophy Race as part of the 60th anniversary running of the coolest race on the Great Lakes. Close to 100 boats are expected on the start line to make the thrilling, 75-mile, overnight trek to Burlington, then Niagara and back.

A few things you need to know, before you set sail:

*     On-site check in: Race check in desk open Thursday, 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and Friday, 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Port Credit Yacht Club.
 
*     Skippers' meeting (mandatory): 6 p.m. Friday, in the Lakeshore Room. Arrive early to enjoy a racers' BBQ on the patio (turkey or beef burger, $12 plus tax; credit/debit only) from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

*     First warning signal: 7:45 p.m.

*     Race documents: Download the Notice of Race and Sailing Instructions, available only via Yacht Scoring. Please print out your own copy or carry an electronic version on board.

Post-race social:
Plan to tie up at PCYC after you cross the finish, and stick around for Sperry Yacht Dogs, served from noon on Saturday until our flag ceremony and 60th anniversary social, around 2:30 p.m. (arrival dependent).

Short-handers welcome their season debut

For solo sailors and double-handed entries in the Lake Ontario Short Handed Racing series, the season starts Sunday May 31 with a short-course day race.

*     Skippers meeting: Gather with your friendly LOSHRs competitors at 9:15 a.m. sharp Sunday for the pre-race meeting, and be sure to pick up this year's skipper T-shirts. Breakfast will be available prior to the meeting ($12+ tax, credit or debit only).

*    First warning signal: 11:25 a.m.

*     Race documents: Download the LOSHRs Notice of Race and Sailing Instructions, available only via Yacht Scoring. Please print out your own copy or carry an electronic version on board.

 

Volunteers needed, on and off the line

 

We have a few spots left to fill this weekend on the Susan Hood finish line and race committee crews, as well as water and shoreline crews later in the summer for the LO300 Challenge and LOSHRs.

 

It's a great way to stay in the game, if you're not racing, or to gain experience in race management. Please email [email protected] to volunteer or get details.

 

 

 

LO300 Racers: get your rating certificates

Whether you opt to race IRC or PHRF in this year's upcoming Lake Ontario 300 make sure to carry your up-to-date certificate.

If you don't have a PHRF-LO certificate, or need to have one renewed for the 2015 season, please contact your local club handicapper no later than June 1, to ensure the process can be completed in time to determine the fleet splits.

Check if your PHRF certificate has been renewed by clicking through to the PHRF Lake Ontario website. Note that many ratings assigned by PHRF-LO in 2015 are different from those in previous years because of changes in PHRF-LO practices.

CARRY IT WITH YOU: All racing vessels need to carry aboard a copy of the current, signed measurement or handicap certificate signed by the owner to whom to the certificate was issued.


Visiting yachts: please register with PCYC

Port Credit Yacht Club asks visiting racers for all events to please register your vessel with harbour staff to ensure assignment to an appropriate dock or a spot on the raft. Add your vessel details as a guest on Port Credit's online site for visitor registration (for the SHTR and LOS
HRS events) or contact [email protected].
