John Ratzenberger Headlines "Love Our Schools" Gala - January 29
John Ratzenberger
He's an accomplished actor, inventor, and entrepreneur. John Ratzenberger is perhaps best known as Cliff Clavin from the popular TV show "Cheers." He also holds the distinction of being the only person to appear in every Pixar movie produced. Ratzenberger's passion, however, is promoting career and technical education in our nation's schools. As Senior Fellow at the Center for America, he initiated the 10 by 20 Campaign which is to have 10 million newly-trained, skilled workers by 2020.

John will bring his presentation, "Made in America: Expanding Skill, Education, and Entrepreneurship for the 21st Century" to Douglas County on Friday, January 29, 2016. Cielo at Castle Pines will play host to this special evening benefitting DCEF's Innovation Fund, which provides monies for classroom equipment, technology needs, student enrichment activities, and professional development opportunities for our teachers.

"We're excited to have John Ratzenberger here in Douglas County to support our schools and the Foundation. He has a great personal story, but more importantly he shares our District's vision which is to prepare our students for a 21st Century workforce," said Jason Christensen, Executive Director of DCEF. Way to go, Renaissance EA!
October means BOOTCAMP!  Renaissance Educational Alliance, the DCEF Chapter at Renaissance Elementary Magnet School in Castle Rock, held its 5th annual fall fundraiser on October 2nd, raising over $40k for the school's Renaissance Fund. This Fund supports programs like music, art, P.E. and sustainability at the school, as well as their unique Outdoor Learning Environment, adventure education equipment and technology updates.

In addition to fundraising, the event also raises awareness about the needs of the local community. This year the school supported the Douglas Elbert Task Force, the Dumb Friends League and the Reach Out & Read program at the Tri-County Health Department, by collecting needed items for these charities. The event was a big success on many fronts, bringing in 1,278 books for the reading program, 358 items for the Buddy Center, 758 personal care items for the Task Force and 79 birthday bags for the Task Force's Birthday Room...and the weather cooperated as well!

The students love the physical challenge of the obstacle course and participating with fellow students, and they also connect with the service project piece that allows them to choose the area of need that most speaks to their heart so the impact of their service makes a connection in a real, authentic way.

DCEF Welcomes New Staff Member
Ashley Sommers
Introd ucing Ashley Sommers.
Ashley comes to DCEF with K-12 foundation experience having spent the last four years at the Cherry Creek Schools Foundation where she served as their Programs Coordinator. Coming to the Douglas County Educational Foundation has special meaning for Ashley and her husband who have two children enrolled in Douglas County Schools. "I'm so excited to now have the opportunity to give back to my children's school district and our community," said Sommers.

Ashley will take on administrative duties as well as helping out with programming and program development. "As we aim to grow our community impact, we're enthusiastic about having Ashley on board. She's had proven success in K-12 foundation work including the creation and execution of one of Cherry Creek Schools Foundation's major annual events, The Cardboard Challenge. With the Apple Awards underway and Lend-a-Hand School Supply Drive on the horizon, she'll be able to hit the ground running," said Jason Christensen, Executive Director of DCEF.

Sommers succeeds Carol Stulz who recently retired after 16 years of service to Douglas County Schools and the Foundation.

What do Google Boulder's "Chief of Stuff," the State of Colorado's Archaeologist and the County Coroner all have on their calendar for  November 10 ? The Foundation-hosted "Career Connect 8th Grade Expo." In its fourth year, the Expo introduces District 8th graders to future careers, so they can start thinking about their academic path and opportunities early. For Treasurers
Does your Chapter support its teachers with a classroom allowance? Many Chapters wish to provide monetary support to their teachers for items and supplies purchased for use in their classrooms through small grants. The best way to accomplish this is to have teachers make the purchase(s) and then submit their receipts for reimbursement up to the stated grant amount. District employees are reimbursed via direct deposit on Thursdays and can expect reimbursement within 3 weeks of DCEF receiving the necessary pay voucher and back up. For information, please contact Alyson at 303-387-0503.
Colorado Gives day is December 8th
The countdown has begun for the 2015 Colorado Gives Day on Tuesday, December 8. The statewide promotion of this day of online giving will ramp up soon, and the DCEF is one of the many non-profits in the state who participate. To make it even easier, starting November 1 you can pre-schedule a donation that will be executed on December 8. Last year, DCEF and five of it's Chapters participated in Colorado Gives Day and were part of 1,700 non-profits who raised over $26 million in one day!

Chapter Leaders - if your chapter would like to set up a fundraising page and participate in Colorado Gives Day, visit our website for more information.
