Graduates Celebrate at December Ceremonies
|
Congratulations to our December graduates who received diplomas at ceremonies held Dec. 11 at the Universities at Shady Grove (USG) and Dec. 14 in Baltimore. Clare Hastings, PhD '95, BSN '77, RN, FAAN, chief nurse officer, National Institutes of Health Clinical Center Nursing Department, served as graduation speaker at USG, and Deborah Trautman, PhD, RN, FAAN, chief executive officer, American Association of Colleges of Nursing, spoke at the Baltimore event.

UMSON Hosts Fall Pi Chapter Honor Society Induction Ceremonies
UMSON held its fall Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) Honor Society of Nursing, Pi Chapter, induction ceremonies in Baltimore and at the Universities at Shady Grove in December. A class of approximately 175 students and community leaders were inducted. STTI seeks to advance world health and celebrate nursing excellence in scholarship, leadership, and service. Membership is offered to baccalaureate and graduate nursing students who have demonstrated excellence by scholarship.

UMSON Bids Farewell to Retiring Faculty Members
The School of Nursing community congratulates three faculty members that retired in 2015.
Jeffrey Johnson, PhD
, professor, Department of Family and Community Health, and director, Office of Global Health, retired in June after 12 years at UMSON.
Sandra Picot, PhD, CLNC, FAAN, FGSA
, associate professor, Department of Organizational Systems and Adult Health (OSAH), and
Joe Proulx, EdD, RN
, professor, OSAH, retired in December. Dr. Picot had been with the School of Nursing since 1999 and Dr. Proulx since 1972! We wish each of them a happy and healthy retirement.

Welcome New Faculty & Staff
Jeffrey Ash, EdD, has been named UMSON's first Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion. He most recently served as clinical associate professor and director of internships in the Erickson School of Management and Aging Studies at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Dr. Ash is a facilitation expert in the area of diversity and inclusion, with extensive experience teaching and working with multi-cultural and diverse populations at all levels and in a variety of formats in higher education. He holds an EdD from Morgan State University; an MS from the University of Maryland University College; and a BS from Towson University.
Jessica Rowe, MA
, has joined the Office of Research as a Quality Improvement Specialist. Her primary responsibility is advising faculty and students on issues related to research ethics and compliance for both human and animal research. Ms. Rowe most recently served as clinical division manager, Department of Neurology, University of Maryland School of Medicine. She holds an MA in applied psychological research from the Pennsylvania State University, Capitol College; holds a BA in psychology from State University of New York at Potsdam; and is currently pursuing an MS in regulatory science from UMB.

Ronnie Ursin, DNP, MBA, MS '07, BSN '05, RN, NEA-BC, was selected as the 2015 National Black Nurses Association (NBNA) Trailblazer by Dr. Deidre Walton, NBNA president. This prestigious award recognizes an individual whose character reflects leadership in his or her field and in the organization. Dr. Ursin serves as parliamentarian and chair of the NBNA finance and personal committees and is editor-in-chief of
NBNA News.
He is a nursing division director at Reading Health System in Reading, Penna.

New Alumni Directory Underway
The UMSON Alumni Association is working with Harris Connect on a new version of Alumni Today, previously updated in 2011. The publication contains comprehensive biographical listings with contact, career, and family information of our graduates. To assure that our data is as current as possible, Harris Connect will contact alumni to verify that the information we will print is accurate and complete. Please help us make this publication full of the latest information about you and your fellow alumni.

Susan Bindon, DNP, RN-BC, CNE, assistant professor, presented a workshop, "Writing for Publication," at the Organization of Health Educators, held November 2015, in Pasadena, Calif.
Robyn Gilden, PhD '10, MS '01, RN, assistant professor, has been named one of The Daily Record's 2015 Leading Women. The award is given in recognition of women in the state of Maryland, age 40 or younger, who have had tremendous accomplishments in their careers. Click here to read more.
Dean Jane Kirschling, PhD, RN, FAAN, recently completed Leadership Maryland's professional development program, dedicated to building a better Maryland by harnessing the strength of its local business and community leaders. She was one of 47 applicants chosen by a selection committee to complete Leadership Maryland's eight-month, hands-on learning program focused on the state's most vital social, economic, and environmental issues.
