New Training - Strengthening Children's Mental Health

This one-day in-person training, developed in collaboration with Canadian Mental Health Association Ontario, will help anyone running children's programs be more informed and prepared to support their staff in promoting positive mental health in children.  Participants will learn key concepts and factors that affect children's mental health including the impact of stress and environment on a child's ability to cope. This training will provide tools and suggested activities to use with staff to help improve their understanding and interactions with children who face challenges in their programs.

New Report: Physical Literacy and Injury Prevention Study

New evidence shows that there is a need to increase the knowledge of physical literacy and injury prevention by practitioners in children's recreation programs.

The study, which involved approximately 200 leaders from recreation organizations, showed that physical literacy and injury prevention needs to be better incorporated into children's recreation practitioners' training regardless of age, education, and type of organization.

ParticipACTION Report Card Your Child in Sport - Parent Resource

The ParticipACTION Report Card (formerly the Active Healthy Kids Canada Report Card) provides a comprehensive assessment of the current state of physical activity for children and youth in Canada.

For the first time, the Report Card takes a stand on play in nature and the outdoors-with its risks-and includes a Position Statement on Active Outdoor Play!

Aboriginal HIGH FIVE

ARPA is currently exploring together with various Aboriginal leaders across Alberta, how to enhance the quality of sport and recreation programs in their communities. With these leaders support, we hope to increase the relevance of the HIGH FIVE program to various Aboriginal communities.

In May 2015, we trained 11 Aboriginal leaders to become HIGH FIVE Trainers who can now deliver culturally relevant HIGH FIVE training for Aboriginal communities in Alberta!

Welcome new Aboriginal HIGH FIVE Trainers to our HIGH FIVE family!

givingh5Giving a HIGH FIVE

In February of 2015, 19 new High Five Trainers were certified, growing the Alberta High Five Family.

Over the next few editions of the High Five Insider we will highlight some of the new trainers, their experience and insight.

First up, Hollie Cressy, Manager of WinSport Camps

www.winsport.ca

Hollie, a fun loving and friendly Aussie described her training experience as positive.  She appreciated the energy and thoughtfulness that Jen Goeres, Master Trainer, brought to the training, the knowledge she shared with everyone and support she provided at her first course.  Hollie feels that High Five has been a valuable addition to the training offered to staff at WinSport and that her ability to run courses and train the staff with specific examples and scenarios that meet the needs of and relate to the leaders she will be working with will make it even more valuable.

When asked 'Why High Five?' Hollie responded that it encompasses the key elements and important principles of healthy child development while providing a straight forward implementation and training structure.  Hollie's greatest insight since becoming a part of the High Five family and something that impacts her work daily is that "it's the little things that can make a big difference in a child's life".

All the best Hollie! We know you make a difference to the staff and participants you work with and look forward to hearing about your High Five trainings in the future.
