Agronomy Committee 
Meeting Wrap-up

On Thursday, January 7, 2016 the Agronomy Committee held a meeting at the AAI home office in Des Moines, IA. During the meeting AAI CEO Joel Brinkmeyer discussed the current status of the DMWW Lawsuit. Also discussed was the Governor's Education and Water Quality efforts. Brinkmeyer also discussed progress of the Iowa Nutrient Research & Education Council (INREC) and the hosted events at the 2016 Agribusiness Showcase & Conference. INREC will be holding three Environmental Technology Forums and a 1.5 hr Conservation College on Wednesday, Feb 10, 2016. 

Reilly Vaughan, AAI Membership Director discussed the Seasonal CDL updates from the Iowa DOT. The IDOT will be moving forward with making changes to the time frame impleme ntations for seasonal CDLs. AAI will provide more information to the membership as it becomes available. 

The committee discussed the current status regarding Process Safety Management (PSM). This issue will continue to be a top priority for the association. AAI is working with The Fertilizer Institute (TFI) and Agricultural Retailers Association (ARA) on this issue.

Farm Groups Rally Behind Branstad's Water Quality Funding Plan

Officials from two Iowa school districts joined representatives of two leading Iowa farm groups yesterday to literally stand behind Governor Terry Branstad Tuesday as he unveiled a plan to divert some state tax money for school infrastructure projects to water quality initiatives.

Lieutenant Governor Kim Reynolds said the show of solidarity sends a "powerful message" to legislators.

Webinar Is Iowa Nutrient Reduction Strategy Discussion

Iowa Learning Farms begins its sixth year of monthly webinars on Thursday, Jan. 21. John Lawrence, associate dean in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and director for Agriculture and Natural Resources Extension and Outreach at Iowa State University, and Iowa Learning Farms program manager Jacqueline Comito will discuss conservation and the ISU Extension and Outreach role.

The webinar will be live on a special date and time: Thursday, January 21 at 2:10 p.m. Lawrence and Comito will also discuss the Iowa Nutrient Reduction Strategy and the challenges of meeting the goals of reduced nitrogen and phosphorus loss from Iowa. Webinar participants will be able to join in the conversation by typing questions into the chat function of Adobe Connect.
Estate Planning Workshop in
Charles City

Iowa State University Extension is offering an "Evaluating Your Estate Plan" workshop to answer estate and transition planning questions and help people prepare for the future from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. on Thursday, February 11 at the Charles City Public Library, Charles City.

The workshop will discuss the language of estate planning, gift, estate & inheritance taxes, family communication, working with legal and tax professionals and other areas vital to creating a good estate plan.

"Talking about transitions and estate planning is difficult for most people - including rural Iowans - individuals, couples and families," said Melissa O'Rourke, presenter and Iowa State University Farm & Agribusiness Management Specialist in northeast Iowa.
