When was the last time you reviewed your contracts for legal compliance?  Every two years the Nevada Legislature makes changes to state law that has an impact on how you conduct business.  Through a collaboration with the law offices of Kaempfer Crowell we have developed sample documents including: New Home Construction, General Construction and a SubContractor Agreement. These are for the exclusive use by our members, and they will be updated after every legislative session.  For more information contact Stacey at [email protected]

Workforce Development Update:

As we move into 2016, we are getting even more aggressive with our Workforce Development efforts. We are excited to start the year with a new partnership.  Nevada Builders has joined forces with JOIN, Inc., Nevada JobConnect and Western Nevada College to create the  Construction Gateway initiative , an 8-week introductory course through WNC designed to get young adults through a construction-focused program and into entry-level jobs in our industry.  This program will provide participants with multiple credentials including their OSHA-10 card as well as NCCER certification. For our members, this means, trained, certified and work-ready individuals to meet our industry's hiring needs. The program is expected to begin in March of this year.

We continue to actively promote our collaboration with JOIN, Inc. on the
Workforce60  program throughout the state. We are half way t hrough this program and still have several opportunities for our member companies to get involved by providing subsidized, on-the-job training positions in your company for the young adults in this program. This is a great opportunity to fulfill long-term and or short-term workforce needs.  For additional information click here .

BuildNV.org  continues to gain traction throughout the state.  Access to the resumes uploaded to the site is available to all Nevada Builder m embers.  If you need login credentials, just contact our office and take advantage of this resource.

As always, if you have questions or want to ge t involved with our outreach efforts, please contact Pam Duxbury at [email protected] .

PROTECTING WORKERS FROM COLD STRESS
When temperatures drop below normal and wind speed increases, workers are more susceptible to cold stress.  Heat leaves the body more quickly during cold temps and weather-related conditions may cause serious health problems.  Workers whose employment causes them to work in an area that is poorly insulated, outdoors or without heat are more  susceptible to cold stress. Common types of cold stress are:

Hypothermia
  • Normal body temps drop below to 95°F or less.
  • Mild Symptoms: Alert but shivering.
  • Moderate to Severe Symptoms: Shivering stops, slurred speech, confusion, loss of consciousness, death.
Frostbite
  • Body tissues freeze (hands and feet). This can occur due to wind chill when body temps are normal.
  • Symptoms: Numbness, reddened skin develops gray and white patches, and feels firm and/or hard; blisters.
Trench Foot (Immersion Foot)
  • Non-freezing injury to feet, caused by exposure to wet and cold environment.
  • Symptoms: Swelling, redness, numbness and blisters.
To prevent these cold weather hazards, the employer should train their employees on cold stress and prevention; have workers get accustomed  to colder temperatures gradually; and schedule breaks in warm areas.
