When I was a kid, Monty's Steak House was the place to go when we were celebrating or when someone came in from out of town. Like many steak houses of its day, red leather booths dominated the room.
Unless my memory is off, we were there one night, just my parents, my sister and me. Often ladies with baskets of flowers for sale would stroll among the tables, but this night was different. A man wandered through the restaurant, offering handwriting analysis. Knowing that my dad would never spring for something as frivolous as that, I didn't have my hopes up. So I was shocked when my dad suggested that the man analyze my handwriting.
He asked me to write a simple sentence on a piece of paper and looked at it for a moment. Then he said words I've never forgotten, "You are a Cadillac that thinks he's a Volkswagen."
I told my girls that story at bedtime a few years ago, and Katie said, "Aw Dad, he probably says that to everyone."
But seriously, how often are we our own worst critic, when in fact each of us has been given many talents? Our job is simply to bring out the best in ourselves and in others. And when we do that, we have succeeded.
