Tale as old as time, true as it can be. Disney's
Beauty and the Beast
, the smash hit Broadway musical, is coming to the fabulous Fox Theatre this February 2 - 7. We recently got to speak with actor Sam Hartley who plays BEAST in this production.
Sam gave us some insight into his animalistic character and lots of info about the show:
How demanding is the role of BEAST and how do you prepare?
The brilliant part of this job of mine is getting to play make believe that I'm not entirely human. It's a kid's lifelong dream! As an adult it's a little more complicated to stay so physically and vocally 'beastly'. Plenty of proper warm ups, cool downs and water, water, water!!
Tell us about the process of transforming yourself into this character.
There is a good amount of Disney Magic behind all of the enchanted members of the Beast's castle. The process takes about 30 minutes, and has become such a second skin that I find myself checking to see or feel elements when I'm completely out of costume.
What can fans of the original Disney movie expect to see?
Everything they know and love-- and more! There are new songs in the stage production that draw on themes from the movie, and feel just as familiar. I promise you'll leave humming a song you didn't know until you see the show!
 Which is your favorite scene that you appear in?
One of the best parts of taking this through different regions and cultures around the country are the people we meet. Undoubtedly, audiences everywhere audibly gasp when Belle is revealed in her beautiful yellow dress, before the famous dinner scene. Sharing that with them is so special to me.
What are some other musical number stand outs from the show?
Two favorites of mine: "Gaston" & "Human Again". We have such a strong core in our ensemble, and their heart and sound will blow you away. As a lover of the film, watching the intricate choreography in Gaston is fascinating. Such a fun number, that I find myself dancing to backstage.
How does the show play to audiences of all ages?
The magic of Disney is how themes age through generations. As a child, I loved the fun characters and great songs. At 27, I find myself relating to the Beast in his journey to self-acceptance. I can't wait to see how it will hit me years from now. It presents itself in very powerful ways to all ages.
