  This Month's Program

Attention Members-this months program is expected to draw a large audience.

It is important that you make reservations for the lunch or cancel your reservation if you are unable to attend.

We know that things come up, and schedules change, but we'd like to make the best possible accommodations for our members and our speakers, especially when it comes to audiovisual needs.

More accurate reservations are key to a more inclusive room set-up. In addition, we'd like to reduce the number of meals wasted each month and minimize TEMPO expense.

If you make a reservation and have to cancel at the last moment, please contact Kristin DeGroot at : tempoconnects@gmail.com.

Federica will share her vision for Lands' End and current plans to elevate the iconic Wisconsin based company into a meaningful global lifestyle brand.

Federica Marchionni, 43, is Chief Executive Officer of Lands' End, Inc. She assumed the CEO position and joined the Company's Board of Directors on February 17, 2015.

Since 2011, Ms. Marchionni has been President of Dolce&Gabbana USA Inc., and under her leadership, Dolce&Gabbana USA's sales revenues increased significantly. She successfully elevated the positioning of the brand and redesigned strategies for expanding it across multiple channels, target customers and geographic areas.

Ms. Marchionni first joined Dolce&Gabbana in 2001, and was instrumental in developing the strategies that led to the Company's exponential brand growth over the past 10 years. While growing the existing business, Ms. Marchionni oversaw the opening of several key stores - including the 5th Avenue flagship store in New York City as well as stores in other markets including Toronto, Chicago, Aspen and Boston - and also strengthened the brand's partnership with major U.S. department stores. Working closely with the product development teams, sell-through was also advanced in each category and channel, including online. Prior to that, over the course of a career as a global group director at Dolce&Gabbana that stretches back to 2001, she led business development for business units in more than 100 countries.

Ms. Marchionni was also Senior Vice President at Ferrari where she acted as the chief executive of a division that generated an important portion of the company's worldwide sales.

Earlier in her career, Ms. Marchionni held positions of increasing responsibility in product marketing and sales at industry-leading consumer technology and telecommunications companies such as Samsung, Phillips, and Ericsson.

Ms. Marchionni graduated summa cum laude graduate from La Sapienza University of Rome with a Master's Degree in Business Administration. Ms. Marchionni also studied in France and the UK and speaks four languages.

2015 TEMPO Holiday Bazaar

Sincerest thanks to the members of TEMPO for attending the 2015 TEMPO Holiday Bazaar.  The Bazaar was held this year for the first time at Black Hawk Country Club.

TEMPO member support made it possible for 39 Madison area not-for-profits to share their message and fundraise for their cause.

Thanks too, to the members of TEMPO who volunteered their time and expertise in the planning of this years event:  Gail Johnson, Joan Gilman and Michelle Vetterkind.

A special thanks to TEMPO Administrator, Kristin DeGroot, for her diligence and attention to detail.

Please notify TEMPO of any potential not-for-profits that you think might benefit from participating in the 2016 annual holiday event.  The Bazaar is held each year during the TEMPO November luncheon.
Sincerely,
Beth Bennett

Voilà!

Ten times each year, TEMPO women gather for lunch and, VOILÀ, a speaker shows up to enlighten, inform, and inspire us.  How does this happen?   Cue the TEMPO Program Committee, a dozen or so women who, taken together, personify what is great about TEMPO:  they represent different sectors, are different ages, include long-standing and relatively new members of TEMPO, and each is acquainted with everyone in her own business realm.

On one level, it's simple:  well-informed, well-connected women get together about once a quarter and talk - about the ideas that have come from other members; about what is happening in our community, our state, and our world; about who they heard speak recently and what is popping in the press; about topics that are timely or timeless.  Synergy takes over and moves the group to agreement on promising topics and candidate speakers.  There is some magic - alchemists turning the ordinary into the extraordinary.

On another level, it's less simple:  has anyone heard this person speak?  Is this topic different enough from other recent topics?  Does it build on something that's gone before?  Is it fair?  Does it respect the entire spectrum of the membership?  Does it avoid overt partisanship and blatant fundraising?  Will it make us think? Will it make us smile?  Will it make us better informed, more well rounded, more effective members of our community?  Is it consistent with TEMPO's purpose "to connect and develop dynamic women leaders in greater Madison"?

Of course, the devil is in the details: issuing the invitation; working with the speaker to define the topic; getting the biographical information; confirming time, place, audio-visual needs, and so on.  Like every other decision, effective implementation requires follow-through, and the program committee members are adept from concept to nailing down the final details.

Who are these fabulous women?  Here they are:

Beth Bennett              Amy Overby
Eve Galanter              Anne Sappenfield
Sharyl Kato                Michelle Taschek
Carol Koby                 Susan Thomson
Susan LaBelle             Ledell Zellers
Maureen Lokrantz

Our friend and colleague, Patty Struck, chaired the TEMPO Program Committee July 2013 -- June 2015 and remained an active member right up to her untimely passing in December.  We miss her.

Please continue to give us feedback about the TEMPO lunch programs and your ideas about possible topics or speakers by filling out the monthly luncheon survey or dropping an email to any of us.  In return, we will continue to do our best to bring programs that inform and inspire.

Program Chair

TEMPO Goes to the Theater.  Theatre LILA's The Mojo and the Sayso, Promenade Hall, Overture Center.  The Mojo and The Sayso, is about an African American family's strength and faith after their young son is shot and killed by a white police officer.

With compassion, humor, a touch of fantasy, and a unique facility for language, Aishah Rahman's characters cope with the aftermath of tragedy by looking for meaning and a magic charm, or mojo, that will pull them through this difficult time.

The play was recently named in American Theatre magazine as one of a handful of plays that could spark a national conversation, at a time when racial relations have become increasingly strained.

More information can be found on Theatre LILA's website at: http://www.theatrelila.com/  TEMPO has arranged for a discounted group ticket price of $25 each for TEMPO members and guests.  Please register by January 22, 2016.  TEMPO Goes to the Theater

I am behind in sharing my big news:  we bought our company back from Target!  Since 2000 we've been Target Commercial Interiors including locations in MN and AZ, and before that we were Rowley-Schlimgen.

We learned of the opportunity to become independent from Target in March 2015.  Three months later, nine senior managers and three outside investors closed our purchase and launched Atmosphere Commercial Interiors.  It is amazing how fast you can accomplish something when you pull together as a team!  Two other women living in the WI Region join me as owners.

Our holding company also owns our long-time installation partner, OMNI/A&M.  We have 470 team members across both companies and are hiring in all locations.

What do we do?  We provide world-wide services and office furniture for corporate clients including Trek and American Family, supply healthcare furnishings for hospitals / clinics like Marshfield Health, and provide educational furniture for Madison College and the UW.  Our hospitality team is proud to be furnishing Mullins Group's Inn on the Park, and our sports team recently furnished Daytona International Speedway and Madison Square Garden.

We are thrilled to return to our roots as a smaller company engaged in all of our communities, and thanks for letting me share my news!

Arts Wisconsin is pleased to announce that it will be the featured partner charity at Ignite Madison's evening of presentations on Tuesday, January 19, 2016, at the High Noon Saloon in Madison.

Ignite Madison is a high energy evening of presentations by people who have an idea, concept, or story and the guts to get onstage and share it. Ignite Madison has been held since 2013, led by founders Jocelyn Vande Velde and Philip Crawford, who saw an opportunity in the Madison area for people to connect, share stories and be inspired by each other.

Since inception, each Ignite has a theme that tie all the presenters and their presentations together. While past events have covered topics like craftsmanship, food, sports or sustainability, this upcoming January's Ignite focuses on "Getting Away."

"Getting Away" will take place on Tuesday, January 19th, 2016 at 6:30pm at the High Noon Saloon, 701 E. Washington Avenue, Madison. The stories shared will be from ten individuals who have found or continue to find unique ways to step away from their current lifestyle, home, day-to-day routine, mindset and more for a multitude of reasons.

Ignite Madison is philanthropic in nature, with all proceeds going to a charity that represents each event's theme. Past charities have included River Alliance of Wisconsin, Sustain Dane, Big Brothers Big Sisters and Community Action Coalition.

For January's "Getting Away", the partner charity will be Arts Wisconsin. Arts Wisconsin is Wisconsin's community cultural development and citizen action organization concerned with access to the arts and the arts as essential to economic vitality, education for the 21st century, healthy, vibrant communities, and engaged residents everywhere in the state.

To attend, purchase tickets ahead of time for $9 at www.ignitemadison.org, or at the door for $14. Additionally, Ignite has a limited amount of special group packages available with 5 tickets for $25. The event will be filmed and live streamed by Hinckley Productions http://hinckleyproductions.com/live.

Inspired by Ignite? If you are interested in being a sponsor by donating money or a raffle prize to upcoming events, please contact Giovanna Couey. More information can be found at www.ignitemadison.org.

About Ignite & Ignite Madison:  Ignite is a global organization and movement where presenters share their personal or professional passion using 20 slides that autoadvance every 15 seconds for a total of just 5 minutes. Ignite is about telling a story more than presenting a pitch - so no notecards or lectures here, but a brief look into the lives of others.  Ignite events are held in over 100 cities around the world. Ignite Madison takes place three times per year. For more information, please visit h ttp://www.ignitetalks.io/ (global) or www.ignitemadison.org (Madison).

About Arts Wisconsin:  All proceeds from this event go to Arts Wisconsin, Wisconsin's voice for the arts, concerned with, working on behalf of, and speaking up for, the arts, arts education and creative economy throughout Wisconsin. Arts Wisconsin raises awareness of the economic, educational and civic power, value and benefits of the arts and creativity in every corner of the state. Arts Wisconsin provides tools, research, entrepreneurial training and technical assistance to Wisconsin's arts sector and creative industries, for locally-based and community-focused innovation, strength and sustainability. Forward Theater Company presents Pulitzer Prize-winning play, THE FLICK

Forward Theater Company is excited to present the second production in their 2015-16 season, The Flick by Annie Baker. Winner of the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, The Flick takes place in a run-down movie theater in central Massachusetts, as three underpaid employees mop the floors and attend to one of the last 35-millimeter film projectors in the state.

Amidst the daily drudgery, they navigate the small triumphs and heartbreaking moments that are the substance of our daily lives. Issues of race, class, family, and sex underline this awkward, funny, and incredibly touching play. With keen insight and a finely-tuned comic eye,
The Flick is a hilarious and poignant cry for authenticity in a fast-changing world.

Performances run January 28th - February 14th. Tickets $20-$45. Additional details can be found at ForwardTheater.com, and tickets are available at OvertureCenter.org.

Roxanne Van Loon invites TEMPO members to participate in the Junior Achievement Business Challenge student scholarship competition.  Student teams of two compete for scholarships by running a virtual company, making all the decisions a CEO makes.  At the end of the competition, the two teams with the top Performance Index scores win scholarships and advance to the statewide Junior Achievement competition.  There are two ways you can participate. One is to volunteer as a student team mentor.  Each student team needs a mentor to answer questions and offer advice during the competition.  The other way to participate is to sponsor a student team.  The event takes place from 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM on Wednesday, February 17, 2016.

For more details about the event, please email rvanloon@jawis.org.

Message from TEMPO President

Dear TEMPO Members,

We have lost a dear friend and a valued colleague.

It is with great sadness that the members of TEMPO say good-bye to their beloved friend and sister Patty Struck.

Patty passed away on Sunday, December 20, 2015, due to complications from myelodysplastic syndrome.

Patty will always be remembered for her caring and compassionate ways, her supportive nature and her beautiful smile.

Our thoughts and prayers are with her, her husband Larry and their three sons Thomas, Stephen and Jonathan.

Patty's wonderful spirit and beautiful smile will live on in all of us.
