This new year Breastnet is the proud sponsor of Curtis McFarland, 53, who will kick off his marathon running career with the "Rock and Roll Marathon" on January 17th followed by the "Runners Den 10K". As a former college basketball scholarship recipient at Oregon Institute of Technology, Klamath Falls, Curtis understands the self-discipline required to prepare himself physically for competition.
Since he started running in September he has dropped 10 lbs but the weight loss is due to his recent change in diet eating more fresh vegetables and whole fruits and limiting his desserts. He is drinking two 30 gram protein shakes a day. Caffeine intake is limited to ice tea and he does not drink alcohol.
His exercise routine has included running 4 to 5 days a week. He runs two long days between 8 and 10 miles and two short days between 6 and 7 miles after work. He is doing one day of weight training, sit-ups every other night (while watching Jeopardy!), and very importantly stretching with particular attention to his Achilles tendons. He will carbohydrate load the night before the race with his wife's excellent pasta and will start hydrating two days before the race with water and Gatorade.
Curtis's blood pressure has dropped from 220/160mmHg last year to 120/75mmHg still on medication but he hopes to start decreasing this soon. His weight last year was 275 lbs and he weighs in today at 210 lbs at 6'3" -A lean mean machine!
Curtis tells me he is enjoying discovering the newest trends in wicking shirts and sophisticated running shoes. He has made new friends on the running trails and at Runners Den. "I love running" says Curtis-a win win for Curtis and his health.
If you bump into him in his Breastnet T shirt please say hello and join Breastnet in wishing him good luck and good health!
