SAT Word
of the Week

prosaic
(proh-zey-ik)

As used on the SAT, its meaning is: unimaginative; dull; ordinary.

Here it is used in a sentence:  Ernest Hemingway uses prosaic language in The Old Man
and the Sea; this masterful use of ordinary words to tell an exciting story is why the book is considered a classic .

This year's motto:

"The best way to predict the future is to create it."

JROTC on track
for Distinguished
Unit Award

The Carrollton High School Air Force Junior ROTC program underwent a very thorough and intense evaluation inspection Jan. 25 and though it received an overall rating of "Meet Standards,"  the unit earned an "Exceed Standards" rating in 11 of 30 inspection categories, reports Maj. Sylvester Hendrix, head instructor.

Mr. Paul Keeping, director of Region 1 from HQ Air Force JROTC, conducted the evaluation and made special note of the exceptional and outstanding briefing by the cadet staff, Cadets Ameythst Hamilton, Tamiya Moreland, Diamond Glenn, Monica Carias and Abrie'l Murphy. He also applauded the outstanding work of the Cadet Logistics Staff, cadets Abrie'l Murphy, Luis Carias, Savannah Sorensen and Alex Perez, for having a 100 percent accuracy of inventory accountability for uniforms, equipment and curriculum material.

Senior cadets Ameythst Hamilton and Tamiya Moreland were selected and received the Top Performer Award, which is a HQ Air Force JROTC award and is only awarded to the top 2 percent of cadets in a unit during an inspection year.

Maj. Hendrix and MSgt Marvin Cox received "Exceed Standards" ratings for being excellent role models and having great interactions with the cadets.

"I am really proud of all of the cadets at CHS and commend them for a job well done," Maj. Hendrix said of the evaluation process. "Our JROTC unit also would like to thank the CHS faculty, staff and students for their assistance and support during this evaluation."

The unit is on track to be selected again this year to earn the Distinguished Unit Award which will be announced in late April 2016.

Curvino, Eason named
STAR Student, Teacher

Senior William Curvino has been named Carrollton High School's STAR Student and he's chosen his Carrollton Junior High School Accelerated Math teacher Kim Eason as his STAR Teacher.

Eason, now a math teacher at CHS, learned of the honor Monday during a group study session in the school's media center where William surprised her with the announcement. William, who made a perfect score on the math portion of the SAT, credits Eason for his love of math and his success.

The pair now will compete at the region level with hopes of advancing to the state competition this spring. The STAR Student/ Teacher program is primarily sponsored by the Professional Association of Georgia Educators.

CHS alum Greene visits juniors, seniors to talk about Yale
Arizona "Abbey" Greene, a CHS graduate and current Yale University sophomore, visited earlier this month in her role as a Yale student ambassador. An Applied Mathematics major, Abbey shared her journey in the college application process and encouraged students to not be shy in applying to a school they don't think will accept them. "My mom really encouraged me to apply to Yale even though I didn't think I had a chance," she said. Though Abbey was modest about her experience, the 2014 CHS salutatorian also was accepted to MIT, Georgia Tech and other prestigious schools where she could study engineering, but she said Yale seemed to be a good fit and hasn't regretted her decision.
