Our Mentors Rock!
Mentors and Dreamers attended the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra's Dance, American Style during one of this month's Mentor Appreciation Events.
This January - National Mentor Month - our mentors were treated to a joint concert and production by the Boulder Philharmonic and Boulder Ballet where they enjoyed Dance, American Style. In addition, we honored our mentors with an opportunity to accompany their mentee on a tour of the Pepsi Stadium, home of the NBA's Denver Nuggets, and meet a former Nugget player, Walter Davis.

On February 4, "I Have a Dream" mentors are invited to attend a celebration dinner to honor and celebrate the countless hours and endless efforts they have contributed in support of their Dreamers during the last year and to look forward to all the fun to be had in 2016.

From all of us at "I Have a Dream," we would like to say, "thank you," to the 140 mentors for contributing to the social, emotional, and educational success of the Dreamers!

There are over 200 Dreamers waiting to be paired with a mentor. If you or someone you know might be interested in becoming a mentor, please have them apply online at  www.ihaveadreamboulder.org  or they can contact Mentor Coordinator Hannah Lees at  [email protected]

Celebrating a Man with a Dream: MLK
Griffin Dreamer Juan Carlos with his homemade MLK Day Poster, ready to march in the Lafayette MLK Day parade!
Iris Dreamers and program director Francisco participated in the Denver Marade.
Aspen and Iris Dreamers gathered after the Denver Marade.
On Monday, January 18, members of the "I Have a Dream" family gathered to celebrate the life of Dr. King and remember his dream and historic speech, from which the foundation draws its name. Like Dr. King, the nearly 400 low-income children involved with the "I Have a Dream" program have had to overcome their own set of struggles in order to make their dreams a reality.

Each of our Dreamer classes celebrated the life of Dr. King by rallying, marching, and participating in various community celebrations throughout Boulder County. Our Iris and Aspen Dreamers participated in the annual MLK Day Marade in Denver, with over 40,000 other participants from the community.  Rocky Mountain Dreamers sang several songs during the Longmont MLK celebration, where m embers of the community who had participated in the civil rights movement spoke about Dr. King, and there were performances from Baile de Mi Tierra dancers and the Shekinah Glory Choir.  See the Dreamers' photo in the Times-Call

In Lafayette, our Oak, Phoenix, and Griffin Dreamers marched in Lafayette's 11th annual MLK March for Peace to celebrate the unity in our diversity. The march spanned from Lafayette's Festival Plaza to Centaurus High School, where there was a keynote address by Jonny 5 of the Flobots to end the day's activities.

Thanks Eldorado K-8's Little Philanthropists!

The first grade class of Eldorado K-8 raised and donated over $300 to the "I Have a Dream" Foundation of Boulder County!

The students raised the money by doing chores and extra work at home, and decided to donate all of it to our Dreamers. Many thanks to the Eldorado first graders for supporting their fellow Boulder County students!
We would like to say THANK YOU to the following generous supporters who have chosen to leave a legacy and designate a gift to "I Have a Dream" in their estate or financial plans to help ensure that Dreamers will continue to receive the support they need into the future.

Mentor Highlight: Rob Wellington

Rob Wellington has been a mentor with "I Have a Dream" Foundation of Boulder County for almost three years. He has helped his mentee, Alex, harness his love for video games, Japanese Culture, and technology. Rob has showed Alex ways to use these passions and turn them into incredible strengths--such as launching a video game club at Boulder High School. It is quite impressive--under Rob's tutelage, Alex made a case for himself and the need for this club at the school, reached out to teachers, requested Media Center access and implemented the program. The group meets twice a week for a few hours! Rob says, "He has really become a leader and go-getter this year and it's awesome to see that!"

Rob and Alex's time together is not all serious. Over the summer they attended a Japanese Culture event called Nan Desu Kan and have plans to attend Comic Con in Denver. Alex reflected on his time spent with Rob and said that the Nan Desu Kan event was definitely his favorite so far. Rob has done a great job at exposing Alex to new experiences, too. Alex says that attending a hockey game with Rob was really fun even though he didn't previously have an interest in the sport.

About the "I Have a Dream" Foundation of Boulder County
Since 1990, the award-winning "I Have a Dream" Foundation of Boulder County has assisted 780 children from low-income areas in achieving their education and career goals by providing long-term personal and academic support, tutoring, mentoring and four-year tuition-assistance scholarships to each graduating student. The organization sponsors entire groups of students from elementary schools or from low-income housing sites and works with these children and their families from elementary school through high school graduation and then "to and through" college. Currently, there are seven active "I Have a Dream" classes in Boulder County, with three classes in Boulder, two in Longmont and two in Lafayette. The "I Have a Dream" Foundation of Boulder County has doubled expected graduation rates for its graduating classes of students and has awarded $2 million in scholarships. The program follows the national model established in New York in 1981 by founder Eugene Lang.
