Greetings Friend of Charleston Promise Neighborhood!
2016 has gotten off to a fast and furious start for our Neighborhood students and families!
Students and teachers returned to the classroom on January 4th, and the following week participated in Expanded Learning Time "Show What You Know" events. Our Community Engagement Council is back on our monthly meeting schedule, and KidsWell Clinics are staying busy treating ailments common to us all this time of year.
On January 19th our Sanders-Clyde Middle School girls participating in Expanded Learning Time welcomed Miss South Carolina 2015, Ms. Daja Dial. Ms. Dial spoke to them about the importance of hard work, making wise decisions, and believing in yourself.
I am thrilled to share that with the help of our generous supporters, we met our Five Year Anniversary Challenge! 53 donors gave $102,320 toward's the $100,000 year-end challenge, yielding a total of $202,320 to support our transformative work. It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Mike Mason, who served as a valued member of CPN's Community Engagement Council since December 2012, and as its Vice-Chair for three years. He joined CPN's Board of Directors in June 2013 and served until his passing in November 2015.
Mike cared deeply about young people, and was dedicated to combating crime in his North Charleston neighborhood. We're not sure how he found us (or how we found him!), but he was dedicated to CPN's work to engage our community in issues important to our residents.
As we reflect on Mike's servant-heart and genuine care for people in the Charleston Promise Neighborhood, let us redouble our efforts to see, listen and take action to brighten a young person's future, whether it be in our city, our neighborhood -- or even our own backyard.

"Show What You Know" - CPN Students Showcase their Learning
|
Sweetgrass basketmaking, boat building and special performances are just a few of the many student activities we celebrated this past month.
"Show What You Know" (SWYK) was an opportunity for students to showcase and share with their families what they are learning during Expanded Learning Time (ELT), an after school academic enrichment program provided through CPN and Charleston County School District's (CCSD) office of Expanded Learning and Community Education.
The events kicked off on January 11th at Chicora School of Communications. Students circulated with family members from classroom to classroom, taking turns showing off their newly acquired skills in building/engineering (Bricks 4 Kidz), strategic thinking through playing chess (Cherry Tree Development), agility and precision through soccer (Soccer Shots), and curatorial design through museum exhibits they created (Charleston Museum).
On January 12th at Mary Ford Elementary School, ELT providers set up tables "fair style," allowing parents to visit each providers' table, ask questions and learn more about their child's participation over the past semester. Table activities included handcrafting sweetgrass baskets (Sweetgrass Basket), art projects (Palmetto Brush) and assembling of goody bags full of healthy snacks (Lowcountry Food Bank). Throughout the fair, students participated in live performances demonstrating acquired skills in Brazilian martial arts (Capoeira Charleston).
The SWYK series ended on January 13th at Sanders-Clyde Creative Arts School. Students showcased how they used math skills and power tools to construct a wooden boat (Lowcountry Maritime Society). A performance by students participating in CPN's Youth Promise leadership program depicted a scene from the movie "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas". To top it off, you could not leave Sanders-Clyde without having some of the delicious pizza made and marketed by enterprising students applying entrepreneurial principles (Corpus Callosum).

| January CEC Meeting Uncovers Top Health Concerns of our Neighborhood |
Last month we shared the results of a community health needs assessment, conducted by nine MUSC College of Nursing students in partnership with Charleston Promise Neighborhood.
This month, the Community Engagement Council's (CEC) meeting included a focus group session to assess health needs in our neighborhood. Diabetes, high blood pressure, mental health, strategies and support for ADHD, and the need to build TRUST in our community of health providers, were at the top of the list. | First Corporate Gift of 2016 Comes from TD Charitable Foundation! |
CPN is grateful to have the financial support of local, national and international corporations doing business in the Lowcountry, who understand the importance of investing in children, education and the future workforce of our community.
Our first corporate gift in this new year comes from the TD Charitable Foundation, the charitable giving arm of TD Bank, America's Most Convenient Bank®. A staunch commitment to active involvement in the local community is a vital element of the TD Bank philosophy.
Funds from the TD Charitable Foundation will ensure the delivery of high quality services and programming to support CPN's four schools, students and families in the CPN Neighborhood, through implementation of after school enrichment programming (Expanded Learning Time), school-based health centers and other health and wellness services (KidsWell), and parent and community engagement activities.
