The Great Surge:The Ascent of the Developing World

Radelet is the
Donald F. McHenry Chair in Global Human Development at Georgetown University and
Non-Resident Senior Fellow at Brookings Institution. His new book discusses progress in reducing poverty, improving health, increasing incomes, expanding health, reducing conflict, and encouraging democracy within the past two decades.
The Great Surge tells the story of this unprecedented progress and discusses
why it happened, and what it may portend for the future.

Engineering for Developing Communities Summer Program

Mekelle, Ethiopia
Technion International will be hosting a summer program, "
Engineering for Developing Communities." The course is led by the Engineers Without Borders Technion Chapter, and will be taught this year in Mekelle, Ethiopia in cooperation with Mekelle University.
The course is open to any undergraduate or graduate students from any university in the world.
This unique program provides a hands-on, real life learning experience for those interested in making a difference in the way engineering is practiced globally regarding community development. Students are challenged to approach problems with innovative and critical thinking, and are provided with multi-disciplinary tools to address a wide range of engineering and development challenges in a sustainable and holistic way. The Mortens
on Center provides travel grants to students who are prese
nting their EDC-related work at conferences. The amou
nt of funds available has also recently increased! Students can now apply for $300 travel grants for domestic conferences and $500 grants for international conferences. Details are available on the MCEDC resources website, in the section called "
