HUHS Science Teachers Participate in Med(3) Program
Science teachers Jamie Lauer and Mark Arnholt participated in the pilot of MED 3, (The Marquette Experience, Drug Discovery and Development) program as two of seven teachers selected across the state. They were partnered up with Graduate student Britt Wyatt and Dr. Martin St. Maurice at Marquette Univeristy. They began in September and finished up their research in Mid January. They had the opportunity to research a particular protein and determine its molecular structure through x-ray crystallography. They began by getting DNA from a coral into bacterial cells. The bacteria then begin to make the protein of interest. The protein of interest was mPlum, a fluorescent biomarker used to track other proteins inside of a cell. The protein is then isolated and crystallized. X-rays are passed through the crystals, and the diffraction is used to determine the location of each amino acid in the protein. This process is important to understand the structure and function of proteins and can be used in the development of new treatment options for diseases and disorders. The process of protein crystallography will be used to show high school students how academic research is conducted and to give them a taste of how intense this process is at the collegiate level. Our Hartford Chronicle student writer Brendan Anderson also did a story on the teachers earlier this year, you can read by clicking here. To view a slide show of all of their adventures throughout the process, click here.

Most Likely to Succeed

Last night many teachers, community members, and parents came together at HUHS for the presentation of the educational documentary, Most Likely to Succeed. The movie follows students and parents through project-based learning with an emphasis on "soft skills" to prepare students for success after high school. Special thanks to the area schools that put on this video presentation (HUHS, Erin, Neosho, Saylesville, and Friess Lake). After the presentation, a short reflection took place led by Friess Lake Administrator John Engstrom. We hope to continue to offer such discussions with community input as we prepare for changes in our educational systems.

Some senior student still have not picked up their immunization records from the Health Office.  All seniors have records to be picked up whether they are graduating or not.  Please ask your student if they have picked them up and if not remind them to do so.

What is the Zika Virus?  This is some very important information for people who are planning to travel outside of the US, especially pregnant women or women who are trying to get pregnant.

News from the Counseling Department
ACT Testing
All students considering a two or four-year college experience are reminded to take the ACT test during their junior year.  Students can register for the ACT at www.actstudent.org . When registering, students will need the HUHS school code, which is 500-850.   Please remember to check the website to see if the college(s) your son or daughter is considering requires or recommends the ACT writing test.   The test fee for the ACT is $39.50 and the ACT with writing is $56.50.   If you feel you cannot afford the test fee, please ask your child's counselor if you are eligible for a fee waiver.

HUHS is an ACT test center for all testing dates. The test dates for the 2015-2016 school year are:
February 6, 2016                               April 9, 2016                                        June 11, 2016

Note:   Please keep in mind all juniors are required by state law to take the ACT at the high school on March 1 (no cost to the student on March 1).  When considering whether or not to take the February or April ACT, it may be best for students to take the March 1 test, then decide whether or not to retake the test in June based upon March results.
