Rabbi's Message
"Mishpatim" It is a word meaning ordinances or laws and deals with everyday problems affecting social relationships. It is the portion that is read from the Torah on Saturday morning following our February 5th Shabbat service.
It sets legal procedures dealing with property and personal damage and liability, employments, marriage and divorce, larceny, arson, homicide, libel, perjury and money lending.
Yes, one can find all of the above in law books throughout the country but they are not written with the guidance and spirit of G-d. They are cold, detached and aloof.
Read the words of "Mishpatim."
"If you lend money unto my people, even to the poor with thee, thou shall be to him as a creditor, neither shall ye lay upon him interest. If thou at all take thy neighbor's garment as a pledge thou shalt restore it unto him before sunset. For that is his only covering, it is his garment for his skin; wherein shall he sleep? And it shall come to pass, when he crieth unto Me, that I will hear, for I am compassionate. Exodus 22:21-26.
I'm pretty sure that you will not find these words in the statute books of California - or in any other state. We are an incredibly bright and compassionate people. Be proud!
Much Love, Rabbi Jerry

Baskets
Starring Zach Galifianakis
Finally....a TV comedy show that delivers! "Baskets" is the latest and by far, best comedy series to appear on television in a long time. It stars the outstanding Zach Galifianakis whose appearance in those in those awful "Hangover" movies almost made them watchable.
Cast as a modern day Pagliacci and written by Galifianakis and Louis C.K., "Baskets" is a wannabe clown, whose every fiber of his pudgy body wants to succeed and be the best.
His experiences at a French school for clowns are dismal at best. He does have an innocent relationship with his friend Penelope. He is in love with Penelope and presents her with a diamond engagement ring. She, however, has no interest in him but salivates at the prospect of moving to America, getting a visa and settling in his hometown of Bakersfield. Her demands are simple. She will not live with him and must have free reign to go out with whomever she chooses. He agrees.
Once in Bakersfield he gets a job at the Buckaroo Rodeo, which is offered to anyone who 'walks through the door asking for a job as a clown.'
The Rodeo's owner, a terrific Ernest Adams, nixes Baskets chosen clown name, Renoir, and tells him to use his real family name that happens to be, Baskets.
Galifianakis is a hoot trying to direct the bulls away from the matadors...and, in doing so, will elicit many hearty laughs NOT accompanied with a ludicrous laugh track.
Enter Martha Kelly as a soft-spoken insurance agent who is assigned to adjust Baskets' claim after his motorcycle is run over by a car. She is a wonderfully cast character who seemingly falls for him but underneath her outward timidity is a strong will whose dedication to her company and to Baskets, is evident.
Add to the mix Louie Anderson as the mother of Galifianakis and his successful twin brother and you've got yourself the beginnings of a TV series that is unconventional and very funny.
Oh yes, due to the rodeo's dangerous work conditions and low pay, clowns tend to quit leaving Baskets as head clown.

"Baskets" is on FX every Thursday Night

REVIEW FROM THE PEW
BY Rabbi Jerry Ram Cutler
Louis & Keely 'Live' At The Sahara
Hey, if it's Louis and Keely you miss, I mean, go already to the Geffen Playhouse. You'll have a good time, hear some great tunes and enjoy some pretty good singin' and music. If you don't, you're gonna miss a good time. And, good times are hard to come by, these days. Ya hear me?
Anthony Crivello is an energetic Louis Prima who shares the late great entertainers heritage. His singing and dancing is a credit to Prima's memory as is his backup band featuring Colin Kupka as Sam Butera. "The Witnesses" blend in beautifully with the mood and story that unfolds on the Geffen stage.
The evening, however, belongs to Vanessa Claire Stewart who not only co-wrote the script but also shines as Keely Smith. Her energy enhanced by her voice captures the mannerisms and innocence of her performance. She is, at first, a shy and simple girl who jumps at the opportunity to join the bombastic Prima. They blend together and shake up the scenery and audience with their combined energy.
When Keely's fame, thanks to a recording contract and push from Frank Sinatra, starts to bloom, Prima's popularity starts to fade. No longer in the driver's seat, he doesn't take kindly to being just a passenger. The friction that begins to unfold is deeply felt as Keely desperately tries to keep their love intact.
It is a well-paced and entertaining evening. For those too young to have heard of the two stars it will serve as a moment in time when Louis and Keely 'killed' them at the Sahara.
The actor portraying Sinatra, Paul Perroni is tall and handsome with a full head of hair. I had a hard time picturing him as The Chairman of the Board. However, as a versatile actor (he plays a few parts) and singer, who doesn't like Paul Perroni?
