AAI Attends AGP Annual Meeting

AAI CEO Joel Brinkmeyer and Membership Director Reilly Vaughan joined AGP Inc., long time AAI member, for their annual meeting in Omaha on January 21 and 22.  AAI was in attendance to help celebrate another fantastic year for AGP and its members. AAI staffed a booth to interact with AGP members, talk about work AAI is involved in, provide handouts, and promote our annual Showcase & Conference.  We would like to thank all the great folks at AGP for this opportunity to see many of our ag cooperative members as well as meet some of their board members and spouses.  AGP is a great success story and model of how the cooperative system can work very well for its members.  We would to thank the members that we were able to interact with and gain valuable information to help better serve the entire agribusiness membership. We would like to thank Ed Woll, Senior Director of Corporate Services and Matt Caswell, VP, Member/Corporate Relations & Government Affairs for inviting AAI to their event.

AAI Legislative Breakfast Overview

On Tuesday, January 26, AAI members and board members spent a few hours at the capitol interacting with legislators and government officials who stopped by for our annual Legislative Breakfast. Members spoke with Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey, Governor Terry Branstad, senate majority leader Mike Gronstall, and numerous other elected officials while providing some morning nourishment before the legislative day got underway.

The annual AAI Legislative Breakfast  serves as an important time to cultivate relationships with our elected officials in an informal setting and show our appreciation for the work being done at the state house. Thank you to all of the members who ventured out early and participated to make this event a success.

Fuel Summit Reflects on Years of Growth

While politics got much of the attention from outsiders during the Iowa Renewable Fuels Summit Jan. 19, there was actually some shop talk.

This was the 10th annual Iowa Renewable Fuels Summit, and industry leaders took the opportunity to emphasize how much the industry has grown in that time.

Monte Shaw, executive director of the Iowa Renewable Fuels Association, pointed out that a decade ago, there were 26 ethanol plants producing about 1.7 billion gallons of ethanol a year in Iowa. There were also eight biodiesel plants producing about 75 million gallons of biodiesel.

Today, there are 43 ethanol plants producing about 4 billion gallons and 12 biodiesel plants producing about 242 million gallons.

DuPont 'Committed' to Iowa in Dow Merger
by: AgriPulse

DuPont, which is planning a merger with Dow Chemical, says it is "committed" to the state of Iowa, where the company's Pioneer seed operations were founded 90 years ago.

However, a statement issued by DuPont stopped short of saying what would happen to the Johnson, Iowa-based DuPont Pioneer unit after the merger.

Sen. Charles Grassley, the Iowa Republican who chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee, told reporters Tuesday that he wants to make sure the seed operations remain in Iowa if the planned merger of the agribusiness giants goes through. Losing DuPont Pioneer's base would be a "substantial blow" to his state, he said.

"We're not going to give that up. They had better take that into consideration," he said.

Ninth Circuit Court Denies Move by EPA to Vacate Herbicide Label

Ag media was abuzz late last fall when the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency filed a petition to vacate the label for Enlist Duo claiming the need for further study of potential synergies between 2,4-D choline and glyphosate - the active ingredients in the product.

While it was implied that the label was "gone" because of the EPA move, in fact Enlist Duo was always in force, awaiting the next move by the court based on the agency request. This week the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals denied EPA's motion to vacate the Enlist Duo registration.

In a short statement issued by the company Dow AgroSciences says it will "continue to work cooperatively with the U.S. EPA concerning Enlist Duo."

Branstad, Reynolds & Northey Announce Flood Reduction and Water Quality Grant

Friday, January
22, Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad, Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds, Iowa Sec. of Agriculture Bill Northey and key federal and state partners announced that the State of Iowa was awarded nearly $97 million from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development as part of the National Disaster Resilience Competition that will help accelerate flood reduction and water quality efforts in key watersheds over the next five years.  Through this new federal funding, the State of Iowa will continue collaborative efforts in both urban and rural areas to reduce flooding and install voluntary new water quality practices.

"I am proud that Iowa is being recognized for our leadership in advancing innovative and data-driven flood reduction and water quality efforts," Branstad said.  "This grant adds significant Federal resources to build on the efforts of the Iowa Nutrient Reduction Strategy and complements our recent proposal to extend the   SAVE fund to support long term funding for education infrastructure and water quality efforts."
